US for revival of active monarchy in Nepal? Karan Singh meets ex-King: Report

Telegraph Nepal

Can the world lone super-power, United States, afford another failed state in South Asia? Perhaps not!

With war torn Afghanistan already a failed state, Pakistan zeroing in the failed state status and, continued political instability already pushing Nepal to imminent economic collapse, should the US revise its Nepal policy?

The Nepali Patra Weekly, October 29, 2010, claims that the US has all of a sudden acquired an active posture in Nepali politics. The US is entirely convinced that the Nepali political actors and political parties were an incompetent lot and to expect positive results from them would be a self defeating exercise, writes the weekly referring to various sources in Kathmandu.

"The US is overly concerned over the increasing hobnobbing between leaders of the largest party in the Constituent Assembly, Unified Maoists and Communist China. The current state of Nepali politics is not appropriate for institutionalizing democracy in the country. And, the continuation of political deadlock could lead to the state capture by the Maoists with the support of the Chinese", the US has also comprehended.

The US basically fears that Nepal could become ultimately another North Korea in Asia, the weekly reveals.

Sources have told the weekly newspaper that the US is in favor of "reviving monarchy in Nepal".

Interestingly, the report reveals that the US is not in favor of reinstating Gyanendra Shah as just as a Constitutional Monarch but it wants to see the former sovereign as an "active monarch". Sudden twist in Nepali politics?

Whether the US ambassador Scott H. DeLisi upon meeting Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal of Unified Maoists' party at his residence recently floated this idea or not is not known?

In the meantime, report further claims that Dr. Karan Singh-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Cell of the Congress Party in India who is also a trusted friend of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, had recently sneaked into Kathmandu and met with the former king of Nepal, Gyanendra Shah. Why Singh landed in Nepal and whom he met in Kathmandu yet remains a mystery. But he met his close relative-Gyanendra Shah.

In April 2006 Dr. Singh was sent to Kathmandu as a Special Envoy to the Prime Minister of India and had met with the opposition leaders and King Gyanendra that finally led to the abolishment of the only Hindu Monarchy.

Interestingly, the US lobbying for the restoration of Nepali monarchy and the sudden dash of Dr. Karan Singh to Kathmandu in some way or the other could be linked.

  • It was absolute nonsense in the first place to abolish the king.he is decendent of a family who united nepal.the king should be respected.the army also should have kept to their honour of ensuring the king remains n not allow some messed up party with greedy intentions to run the state.I also feel that the kings of india should be reinstated

  • Monarchy system like in UK is strongly recommended for Nepal. National Unity Government is to be formed and write New Sambidhan for the benefit of people and Nation. The corrupt and criminal politicians and leaders are not to be included in this Government. Let them work and plan for the future of the country for five years. After five years, they should run the election for the democratic process. All politicians must realise their past mistakes and move forward for the betterment of our Motherland Nepal. All citizens of Nepal are requested to give one more chance for the politicians and leaders to be Swaviman Nepali. India and China are requested to defuse the political crisis of Nepal by keeping themselves quiet. Please do not try to employ our politicians as your special agents to destroy our Motherland Nepal (One and only Himalayan Kingdom of the World). Jai Nepal!

  • Absolutely agry that Nepali political actors and political parties are an incompetent lot. Sooner or later the world leaders has to realise that. The only option left for the peace and stability is to restore monarchy with due respect.

  • Some of the above comments are excellent. Revival of monarchy is not at all a bad idea! Nepalese do not fear anybody not even the almighty.Only thing they used to fear was the King.

  • I strongly agree most of the comments in favour of restoring monarchy. We Nepalese cannot think of Nepal without the institution of monarchy. Sooner or later, the monarcy will be back but it is better for this ugly politicians if they agree to accomodate themselves within the one umbrella of constitutional monarchy. The more they delay they will be thrown out from the political scene of our country. Long live monarchy. Jai Nepal.

  • It is commendable that Telegraph Nepal has time and again brought news that totally sheds light to ongoing plight of the Nepalis. It is indeed sad that we Nepalis have to live in the shadows of major giants US, India, China, European Community etc. I feel utterly helpless when they can command and destroy our country to their whims and totters albeit with the help of our very own extremely absolute idiotic incompetent political villains. We as Nepalis have shut our mouth for a long time and witnessed high volume corruption, mismanagement, brokerage, inhumane treatment to our nationalism and overall the selling of our dignity to live in peace and harmony. I personally think the 12 point Agreement was a death penalty signed by the political parties and Maoists but drafted by the US, India and alike. Finally, I guess everybody has come to their senses and realized that Monarchy is a necessity and the world cannot do without it. We as Nepalis are finally going to get our King back and I must say that the road ahead should be glorious if the deal now struck is long lasting and beneficial to Nepalis in general. Though, this reversal too needs outside help, I feel no remorse as they were the ones in the first place to create this chaos. Let them do their (US, India, EU) own dirty laundry! They should be given the opportunity to repent anyways. But personally I think we Nepalis will never forget the hardships and sorrows thrown at us. China under the Monarchy has always enjoyed a special place. We have our very own legacy just as we have with India. I think India should respect this and get a treatment for their Chino-phobia illness. Not everything is "Anti India". Do not walk around with this self-centered ideology and respect your neighbors; do not impose or patronize. I think we can get along fine. Maoists on the other hand are a totally another matter. This requires a whole new chapter for discussion. Overall, "A Very Good News Indeed".

  • WE NEPALI CAN NEVER BETRAY OUR MOTHERLAND.NO BOBY CAN THINK SO.WE ALSO SHOULD UNDERSTAND IN REALITY THE SITUATION HOW MONARCHY WAS POSTPONDED.I SAY POSTPONDED SUBJECT TO THE ARRIVAL OF THE NEW CONSTITUTION. WE SOW THE DRAMA AND ROBBERY OF A POOR COUNTRY LIKE OURS AND YET THINKING THAT THIS SYSTEM IS BETTER?IN FACT WE ARE NOT BETTER PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO ARE RUNNING THE COUNTRY.THE LIFE OF NEPAL IS PRIME AND FORMOST NECESSARY FOR ALL OF US AND WE BY THIS TIME HAVE SEEN THAT ONLY THAT MORACHY CAN SAVE US. WE HAVE LOST OUR IMAGE AND PRESTIGE.WE HAVE LOST EVERYTHING AND WAITING FOR PERHAPS LAST BREATH,O ALL MY FELLOW CITIZEN!WAKE UP AND SAVE OUR MOTHERLAND -CALL THE KING AND RESTABLISH THE HINDU AND KINGDOME AGIN WITH A LIMITED POWER TO THE KING AND REST IN THE HAND OF THE PEOPLE. • Indeed, the world cannot afford a country like Nepal to be like Afghanistan, Pakistan, nor North Korea. The reason King even sacked these looser leaders in the first place was the very reason that they are corrupt and inefficient in leading the country forward. In fact, these leaders are so corrupt they are moving the country backward 100 years. People are tried of these leaders, and Nepal can only move forward if the Monarchy is active in Nepal. Enough is enough.

  • I admire all the comments made by the Patriots. I also thank the Telegraph for publishing the truths. We Nepalis are worried about our motherland. Nepal was turned violent land and failed nation due to the party crooks of NC, UML, Maoists, RPP, and RJP. To save Nepal, we definitely need Constitutional Monarchy. Nepal's image has been plunged since the jungle-dwellers-killers Maoists were given shelter by world record breaker in corruption (NC) and most opportunist party in the world called Emale (UML). Nepal's future is guaranteed if we could reinstate Monarchy in Nepal. Only then, we will remain as Nepalis. It is good to hear that international community is favoring Nepal as Kingdom. However, it is the duty of Nepalis to fight for the right cause. Tsunami of millions will support our cause for the restoration of Monarchy. We just need to work seriously. Let's build the "Front for the Restoration of Monarchy in Nepal". Bishal Shah, New York

  • nepali people, political party and king are the triangle of the nation.if you try to avoid one line it will never be complete.i mean king can not ride the nation without help of rests.same way, neither political party nor nepali people can decide the future of nation without the help of two sides.so political party and king have to sit together and they have to talk flexible from each side. if these three sides bound strongly together,we can see new sun shine in our country.we dont have to ask for political help to india ,china and others.they will not able to play the gamble in our country. finally, no one can decide monarchy is good or republic system is good. when triangle will realise and bound together and reach in the final decision that will be the acceptable for all nepali people.jay nepal..prabesh aryal (aldershot, united kingdom). %%%%%%%%%%%%%% Are you from biratnagar?

  • Now it is coming day light. Without any big reason Nepali political parties abolished the monarchical institution it was blunder mistake in Nepali political history. Nepal people want to stablish the constitutional monarchical institution. The great King PN Shah unified the great Nepal. That is why majority of nepali people still behalf of restablishment of monarchical institution. If not people want referendum to finalize the fate of monarchical instituion but in Nepal major political parties are more strong than people. People have compulsion to accept any kind of decision of three major political party ldeaders. That is why democracy is the only pocket toy of three major political paerty leaders'.

  • Dear Editor, You have released this very good news analysis about the revival of monarchy in Nepal. I think- due to rise of undemocratic forces- the communists, India & America might have been convinced to save the monarchial democracy in Nepal. The chaos faced by we Nepalese is due to a bad tendency prevalent in the political party leaders who do not want to acknowledge their crimes. How to chase them is the concern for us today.Whose gesture displaced the royal institution without the consent of the people and that two years' before drafting the constitution. The monarch was displaced through Constituent Assembly (CA). This is a serious defect of the party leaders. They pleaded with the same monarch to reinstate the parliament. In addition, they demolished the institution and self-proclaimed their own head of state. This is in direct contradiction to natural justice. We Nepalese will never support such anti-national and anarchial conspiracy. Why had the Maoist rebelled yesterday, if they had to follow the instructions of the foreigners to blackmail the royal institution and Nepal's nationality? If the news 'revival of Nepalese monarchy' is fact, I extend thanks to the democratic world. I hope, America, EU, Britain and India always success to save the democratic path in the world....... ........ Reply me with comments. Thank you. • Great News. There is no other way to peace, stability and prosperity. The corrupt opportunist politicians and criminals have made peoples lives miserable. Revival of the Monarchy will provide us with a trustworthy and reliable leadership which will always look after our National interest as well as guarantee stability...that is if our neighbors don't sponsor terrorists and rough politicians and sanction threats against us. Hope a lesson was learned by all monitoring the present situation in Nepal.

  • This is what I prefer. We're sick and tired of these political leaders including then Panchayat time. We need an absolute monarchism like king Mahendra who needs to be a developement oriented. No multyparty system in Nepal, as we have seen for more than two decades of failed system. No political system and the ruler is perfect, but at least we should figure it out who is better. Mahendra's time was better. Thank you.

  • Accept it and for Nepal's best interest that monarchy in Nepal was sidelined by brute barbaric, unplanned and unauthorised way (were there any referendum, was it accepted by majority Nepalese, was it not a bargain for power of republic status), have lots of points to say that monarchy vis a vis repeublic status in Nepal needs t be referrunded and if the populace says yes to republic in a state of election where no will be heard, I will change my stance but for now my sympathy and benefit of doubt goest to monarchy. Was it not sidelined as a scapegoat of who will bell the maoist cat, the major political parties are to be blamed for deceiving a system of mutual trust and cooperation for nation building in Nepal, and yes don't even dare and for God's sake abstain from igniting rightist militancy in Nepal it will engulf the subcontinent, I warn it!

  • International community including USA must not make any further delay in understanding that the most necessity institution of monarchy of Nepal was forcibly sidelined by so called vision-impaired and puppet politicians.People have not been fairly provided any kind od democratic practice to decide the fate of most needed institution of monarchy,so the qestion of democratic value and the validity of forcing monarchy to sideline, need to be properly addressed. There's no doubt that the move of so called new Nepal is nothing but a fatal to independent nation as well as new threat to world peace and democracy as well. So,International actors,Immediate neighbours i.e.India and China,well-wisher of Nepal and patriotic people of Nepal need to have an early step to revive fully constitutional monarchy in Nepal, so that Nep[al be able to stand as an independent, democratic, united country. Its a duty of globe to stop Nepal from being another Afghanistan.Ultimately India too needs to understand that due to its past suicidal step to support the visionless politicians finally caused it more headached and unnecessary tension only.So far as China is concerned,it too also unnecessarily bound to face a situation to come forward to involve in Nepal's affairs out of its unwillingness. So this so called chang in Nepal is meaningless and only additional problem to all except visionless and corrupt politicians of Nepal. That's why, role of guardian with dignity and honor to institution of monarchy and eexecutive power to people's elected representatives,is the only best, beneficial and sustainable solution to Nepal, peace in south-Asia and world peace as well.Earlier the realisation better the result.Jay Nepal !

  • Abrupt abolishment of monarchy by power monger and corrupt politicians was a blunder. Nepali politicians have completely failed and people are fade up with them. Not only politics, nation's economy, security, and very existence is at the verge of collapse. To preserve nation's sovereignty and national integrity, monarchy should be revived, but the monarchy should be revived by Nepali people. Monarchy, thus as in the past, should be of the people and for the people and nation. King Gyanendra and the member of royal family should learn from their past mistakes. For a prosperous and peaceful Nepal, Nepali people and monarchy should work together. Corrupt and incompetent political leaders will eventually replaced by young, energetic, patriots in the coming days. No one can snatch Democracy- The totalitarians, secessionist and radical elements will be wiped out soon- it's a matter of time. Thus US, India, China and those friendly nations too should support the idea of reviving monarchy in Nepal. Americans being the champions of Democracy and democratic ideal has a larger role to play.
