Nepal: Unfortunately fortunate
After ailing Girija Prasad Koirala, it should be Madhav Kumar Nepal, the incumbent Prime Minister, who could be taken as a fortunate Nepali leader.
The sudden but yet mysterious death of Madan Bhandari-the visionary leader of the UML who provided the party with a new ideology of people’s democracy, brought fortunes for a redundant Madhav Nepal. Had Madan Bhandari been alive, Mr. Nepal would have yet remained as a loyal disciple of late Bhandari for the latter’s talent and oratory skill was so superb that even his declared detractors applauded his presentation of the communist ideologies that he himself propounded for the Nepali context.
Thus it was the first bumper prize for Madhav Nepal to take up the prestigious seat of late Bhandari. It has rightly been said that when the Almighty wishes then He can make a person from zero to a hero that Madhav Nepal is now.
However, simply replacing someone doesn’t make that the one who has replaced the former should be adjudged best. Madhav Nepal’s tenure as the UML General Secretary for over fifteen years or so has perhaps been recorded as one of the darkest period in the history of the party as it was during his leadership, the party ran amok for power gains and the discipline element in the party was so poor that the lay men used to cut jokes at the party led by Madhav.
From the very beginning, Madhav Nepal proved himself, or at least we were given to understand, to be a power monger who could join hands with any forces, black and white, if it elevated his personal ranks. In the process, this greedy Communist even ignored the last funeral rites of his own mother some years back in the hope that the then ruling King would any time invite him for the post of the Prime Minister of Nepal.
He was hoping against hope. The King never invited him thus the national dress so nicely prepared for the “occasion” remained inside the wooden box for several years.
The second bumper prize came to him in an amazing manner when the 601 white elephants at the Constituent Assembly nominated him as the country’s Prime Minister, May 22, 2009.
This could be taken as the black day for it was on this day fateful day, Madhav Nepal, who embraced humiliating defeats from two different election constituencies, was sworn in as the Nepal prime Minister by the President.
Mr. Nepal’s elevation to the rank of the Nepal PM provided a new definition of democracy. In a way, his elevation as Nepal PM’s post distorted the very demanding features of a democracy of which election is an integral part.
Generally it is taken for granted that an election victorious candidate can assume any senior post in government, however, Mr. Nepal’s assumption of the Nepal PM post meant that if few ruffians agreed and forged consensus then an election defeated candidate of the sort of Madhav Nepal too can assume the post of the Premiership without feeling ashamed. Question is thus if forged consensus, can a donkey be transformed into a cow?
And why should Madhav Nepal feel ashamed? Feeling of shame should be felt or perceived by those who in an ashamed manner elevated the rank of this election defeated candidate. The nation is reeling under the tyranny of this election defeated Prime Minister since nine months plus. However, regular dinner is being served to Madhav opponents at PM’s residence at the cost of the national exchequer.
By the way, Madhav Nepal, clever as he is, by now has already fixed his own brothers in lucrative government posts ignoring the bureaucratic rules and procedures. Some even claim that Mr. Nepal’s practically all the near and distant relatives are in power. Mr. Nepal did a good job in having empowered the entire “upadhyaya’s “ of his family or else who would guarantee his own brothers-the upadhyaya’s- money spinning and lucrative diplomatic posts.
Thus democracy is not for the people. It is for Madhav, to the Madhav’s by the Madhav’s.
Personally speaking, Nepal PM Madhav Kumar Nepal is a thorough gentleman. We are not against his modest personality that he possesses. But he should be admired in that he provided a new perverted definition to the system of governance which is democracy. Friendly nations must applaud and if possible copy this new definition.
Nepal PM must be invited by friendly nations to lecture on the beauties of the democratic system. We presume that if invited, Mr. Nepal will mesmerize his foreign audience.
Why not to begin with Barrack Obama?
