DRR Tool Kit for Nepal CA members , EU-UNDP take initiatives

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Toolkit, a concise information kit on Disaster Risk Reduction for Nepal was released in Kathmandu on Wednesday, February 24, 2010.

Purna Kumari Subedi, the Vice Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly launched the kit amid a gathering of more than 120 participants including Constituent Assembly members, government officials, UN Agencies, I/NGO representatives and various other stakeholders.

The DRR Toolkit has been developed with the view to inform and sensitize the Constituent Assembly members on disasters, risks and need for strengthening policy framework to address disaster risks.

Dr. Alexander Spachis, the Ambassador, Head of the European Union Delegation to Nepal and Robert Piper, United Nations Resident Coordinator, jointly handed the first copy of DRR Tool Kit to CA Vice Chairperson Ms. Subedi while Phanindra Adhikari, a board member of Association of International NGOs in Nepal handed over another copy of the kit to Nepal’s Home Secretary Dr. Govinda Kusum.

Addressing the launching ceremony, CA Vice Chairperson Subedi highlighted the severe impact of disasters on the people and economy of Nepal and stressed on the need for mainstreaming disaster risk reduction.

She hoped that the kit would be of immense use for policy makers and urged the government to take adequate measures to address disaster risks in Nepal .

Dr. Spachis along with Mr. Robert Piper briefed on the initiatives and support programmes rendered by the EU community and UN systems to disaster risk reduction in Nepal.

PV Krishnan of Action Aid Nepal anchored the programme and introduced the toolkit to the audience while Vijay P Singh, ARR & Head EEDMU, UNDP Nepal put his valediction note.

The formal launching was followed by a sensitization workshop for CA members on DRR.

The DRR Toolkit is a professionally designed information pack on disaster risk reduction, specially designed to inform Constituent Assembly members on DRR, sensitize the policy makers on disaster issues and solicit their informed engagement and leadership to strengthen DRR framework in Nepal, says a press note jointly issued by the Action Aid Nepal, United Nations Development Programme, Co-Action Nepal and ECO Nepal.

The Toolkit comprises of overview of disasters in Nepal, NSDRM, existing legislation on disaster management, HFA, need for strengthening DRR framework through an inclusive approach addressing special needs of differentially vulnerable people, disaster map of Nepal, disaster fact sheet and proposed flood early warning strategy as a key DRR measures for Nepal.

The DRR Kit is sleekly packaged to include a notepad, one CD-Rom with all important documents and visuals and card holder. This compilation has been produced by key DRR stakeholders including Ministry of Home Affairs, partners of the DIPECHO programme under European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department, United Nations Development Programme in Nepal, Oxfam GB, Association of International NGOs, DPNet, Nepal Red Cross and NSET.
