Rare gift for Nepal Govt. for ignoring Journalists’ Plight

TGW

Journalists working in the Far-Western region of the country have sent souvenirs to Nepal’s government seated in Singh Durbar, Kathmandu for repeatedly ignoring their plight.

Media personnel had been criticizing the government for turning a blind eye to their problems and suffering however, this time they preferred to offer the government with a rare gift.
Guess what?

As an award for the negligence, media personnel in the far western region handed over broken Goggles (Spectacles)at the Chief District Offices of some nine districts of Far Western region, Wednesday January 20, 2010.

The journalists claimed that the Government formed probe committee to investigate the murder of one of their colleague Jagat Prasad Joshi alias Pandit has unscrupulously wasted some 3.2 million Rupees.

“So we decided that it would be better to award the government with the broken spectacles”, a journalist said.

To recall, Pandit-a journalist associated with the local edition of the Maoists’ Party mouthpiece Jana Disha in the district of Kailali had been missing since October 8, 2008 and whose remains were found in a nearby forest on 28 November, 2008.

Though Pandit was murdered one and half year ago his family is yet to be compensated by the government as promised.

The annoyed Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ)- umbrella organization for journalists in Nepal, in the far-western region decided that the government will be awarded with the broken glasses in all nine districts of the region.

The Chairman of FNJ-Dadeldhura District Chapter, Mr. Ram Dhami and Central member Mr. Chhatra Saud jointly presented the broken glasses to Rajendra Prasad Ghimire, Chief District officer.

Similarly, in Kailali district, the FNJ local chairman Dirgha Raj Upadhyaya presented the symbolic glasses, albeit broken, to Chief Administrative office Basanta Kumar Kanaujiya.

It has become a history wherein the government pledges each time to take action against perpetrators engaged in journalists' murders. The latest example is something stinging if such pledges are to be considered worthless.
