Cunning Smiles Continue, Yet Nepal Political Deadlock Continues
The meeting between the major three parties, the Unified Maoist, Nepali Congress and the United Marxist Leninists’ held November 18, 2009 ended without positive results.
Albeit, the leaders at the meet were seen cutting jokes at each others and were in a pleasant mood. But the talks failed. However, free "breakfast" continues.
Mr. Ram Chandra Poudel, the Nepali Congress Vice President and the party’s leader of the almost defunct Constituent Assembly told the media that with the Maoists’ Party continuing with their earlier stance who demanded that the crisis be solved in a package, the likelihood of consensus has become remote if not impossible.
The Maoists party had demanded correcting the unconstitutional move of the president in the Nepal Army Chief saga and form a national unity government. The Maoists said that concerns raised by both sides be solved in a package to allow the government to pass the budget.
The Nepali Congress and the United Marxist Leninists, the major ruling coalition partners, on the other hand, urged the Maoists to first unlock the parliamentary deadlock in order to allow the government to approve the budget.
The meeting was attended by Maoists’ Leaders Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai, Narayan Kaji Shrestha alias Prakash and Dev Gurung, UML leaders Jhal Nath Khanal and Yubraj Gyawali and NC leaders Ram Chandra Poudel, Arjun Nar Singh K.C. and Laxman Ghimire.
The three party meeting constituted a task force comprising of Maoist Leader Dev Gurung, UML leader Yubraj Gyawali, and Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh K.C.
The task force is set to prepare a draft of a resolution proposal that will be accepted by three parties in order to address the Maoists’ demand for restoration of Civilian Supremacy that would later be presented at the Constituent Assembly.
Arjun Narsingh K.C of the Nepali Congress talking to a media here in Kathmandu, after the meeting, made it clear that the resolution proposal that cites the move of the President as unconstitutional one would be unacceptable to the Nepali Congress Party.
Bhim Acharya of the United Marxist Leninists hoped that the political deadlock would end by Thursday November 19, 2009.
Narayan Kaji Shrestha alias Prakash told the Maoists’ party mouth piece Janadisha Daily that the three parties have agreed to solve the dispute prior to November 20, 2009.
The Unified Maoists’ Party has served an ultimatum to the Government to correct Unconstitutional Decision of President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav prior to November 20, 2009 or face intensified protest programs.
