Nepal Major Parties keep Emergency Option Open

TGW

The leaders of the major partners of the ruling coalition, the Nepali Congress and the United Marxist Leninists held a meeting, Tuesday November 17, 2009.

The NC and the UML leaders discussed possible ways out of the financial crisis faced by the country due to the continued disruption of the Parliament by the Unified Maoists Party.

The Unified Maoists party has been disrupting the Parliamentary proceedings demanding restoration of Civilian Supremacy, which in turn has prevented the government from approving the annual budget from the parliament.

“We have put a deadline before the Maoists to allow the parliament session to continue until November 21-22, 2009”, says Finance Minister Surendra Pandey.

“If they ignore this deadline, we may have to look for other suitable options”, says Minister Pandey.

“The budget would be approved and the government will get the nation out of the crisis”, he added.

Mr. Pandey nevertheless, ruled out the possibility of approving the budget through an Ordinance.

Laxman Ghimire of the Nepali Congress Party, who was also present at the meeting, talking to the media, revealed that the option for imposing an emergency orders was also discussed at the meeting.

Mr. Ghimire nevertheless, assured the media that the government has so far not taken the option for imposing an emergency seriously.

Likewise, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal addressing a gathering in Kathmandu on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, once again asked the Maoists’ party to allow the parliament to continue on humanitarian grounds.

He said the country is facing financial crisis as the government has not been able to pass the budget.

“The Maoists’ Party will be solely responsible for the economic crisis”, Mr. Nepal said.
