Nepal Political parties in a fix, CA deadlock continues
The Nepali Congress, Unified Maoists and United Marxist Leninists Leaders once again sat to discuss whether a possible way out could be found from the current constituent assembly deadlock, September 15, 2009.
With the Maoists’ party leaders preferring not to budge an inch from their earlier stance, the meeting as was expected of it could not resolve the prevailing dispute between the political parties.
The meeting was convened at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat at the special request of the Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal.
The Maoists made it clear that until and unless the ruling coalition partners agreed to hold discussions at the Constituent Assembly the Maoists’ resolution proposal tabled at the CA against President Dr. Ram Baran, the CA deadlock will continue ad infinitum.
The Nepali Congress and the United Marxist Leninists’ leaders were of the opinion that the resolution Proposal holds no significance.
Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai told reporters after the meeting that they had forwarded the idea to solve the current deadlock at the Constituent Assembly but the ruling partners rejected the Maoists’ idea.
Hinting that there was no end to the current stalemate, Dr. Bhattarai said that there was 180 degree difference between the two sides.
He said that the President was totally responsible for the current dispute and that it was his unconstitutional moves of May 3, 2009, that have put the entire peace process in jeopardy.
Reports have it that the Prime Minister repeatedly told the Maoists that the UML and the NC were in no position to accept that President Yadav’s moves were unconstitutional and urged the Maoists’ to mull the issue responsibly and be supportive in finding an amicable solution to the current CA deadlock.
The PM said that the Maoists’ CA deadlock has been blocking the Constitution Drafting process.
“We told the Maoists either to forward impeachment proposal against the President or file a no confidence motion against the government but made it clear to them that we have no sympathies for their Resolution proposal submitted at the CA against the President”, said Raghu Ji Panta a close aide to the Prime Minister.
The meeting however, agreed that the parties in contention should solve the issue amicably and that the next meeting would be held Wednesday September 16, 2009.
