Unified Maoists reject Nepal PM proposal

TGW

The major three political parties, the Unified Maoists, the Nepali Congress and the United Marxist Leninists, sat to finalize the person for the post of the chairperson of the Constitution Drafting Committee, August 26, 2009.

The meeting ended in a deadlock with the Nepali Congress and the Unified Maoists parties remained adamant over their earlier stance that the post be awarded to their respective parties.

Earlier the post became vacant after the UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal resigned from the post only to be nominated as the prime minister of the country.

The Wednesday meeting was called by the Prime Minister himself.

“Both, Nepali Congress and Unified Maoists exhibited their inner desire to hold consensus over the issue however, they did not retract from their earlier stance”, said Laxman Prasad Ghimire, the Nepali Congress Party chief whip.

“The UML and the Nepali Congress leaders repeatedly urged the Maoists to halt the agitation and support the political process” said Raghu Ji Panta, the Prime Minister’s advisor adding, “The Maoists do not seem to be really serious about ending the deadlock.”

“We even told them that if they supported the political process, we were ready to give up our claim for the post yet they did not change their stance,” said Panta.

In the meeting, the Prime Minister forwarded his own proposal wherein he demanded that the post could well be awarded to the Maoists if they abided by three conditions…call off the street protest, stop halting the CA proceedings and be a part of the government or support the government from outside, say reports.

Narayan Kaji Shrestha, the Maoists leader told the journalists after the meeting that the party rejected the proposal because it was just a conspiracy to alienate the Maoists.
“We reject all three conditions forwarded by the Prime Minister”, said Narayan Kaji.
