India Election: Fallout in Nepal

Niraj Aryal

Kathmandu, Niraj Aryal: Contrary to what Nepal’s self proclaimed academicians and India’s Left tilted journalists believe India’s Nepal Policy will not even see a minor change with Dr. Man Mohan Singh- the Pakistan born Indian leader, reoccupying the seat of the Prime Minister in New Delhi, with the Thug communists of India gone with the wind in the post election scenario, intelligent analysts here believe that the Communist hijacked India’s Nepal policy of the pre-election United Progressive Alliance Government must see a sea change for good. Which, the analysts further claim, will be in India’s own favor than any one else.

With the BJP- the declared Hindu fundamentalist party already lost the just concluded elections, thanks Indian voters, as they want political stability and economic prosperity over religious extremism in their motherland, they have also ensured that no trace of the age-old dogma is there to be seen in the New Delhi Government. Thanks there is no Yechuri and the government under Dr. Singh will not have to deal with the Communist bullying.

However, this is not the end of Communism in India. Dr. Manmohan is on record to have admitted that the terror of communism far exceeded the Islamic Terrorism. If so then, it is the right time to act. Learn from Sri Lanka.

That Indian leadership is totally confused over Nepal matters, visible with the radical Maoists entering Kathmandu from their NOIDA suburban shelter provided them by the Indian regime, the new government in India should first get rid of the outdated Nehruvian doctrine-anti-China mindset, and secondly, work together with China to help Nepal become a peaceful and prosperous State.

Both, India and China should understand that unstable Nepal is not in the larger interest of either of the countries in the neighborhood. India can no longer suspect China for constructing roads, in their plans to bring railway links to Kathmandu from Lahsa and constructing hydro-power projects in Nepal. Instead, India must stop supporting anti-China elements in Nepal and get rid of the mindset that Chinese disintegration will have no spill over effect into India. Forget it!

The Indian leadership and the Chinese alike must also understand that Nepal Maoists can neither be judged from their pro-India face value nor from their pro-China ideological base, or for that matter, India can no longer trust the words of assurances given to them by the Maoists, while it forcefully drafted the 12-Point Agreement for Nepal which in effect helped Nepal’s inefficient leadership declare the country a secular republic from the only Hindu Kingdom in the world. A secular State was not the agenda primarily, if one were to recall.

The Maoists fresh avowals is as clear as crystal, the Maoists know it well that on the one hand words of praise for India is needed for their political survival and on the other irritating India, synonymous to exhibiting their inclination to China, was needed to safeguard their nationalistic credentials back home. Since Monarchy is not in the current state of things, the ‘Communist Nationalists’ would love to exhibit their affinity towards China. Formerly, the Monarchists were called as Nationalists and by extension taken as anti-Indians. Whether the institution of Nepal Monarchy itself was anti-India is still debatable.

No offense to the genuine Maoists cadres but the Maoists leadership is doing exactly this-playing double to both India and China. Soul searching is needed in the Maoists camp as well. After all for how long can the cadres trust the leadership that continues to play double and behave in a dubious manner?

The fact is that China and India both look overtly concerned over Nepal matters, as is visible with current state of things. With Monarchy in Nepal buried courtesy both India and China, it is also clear that the Hindi-Chini brothers would want their stakes preserved in this country for all time to come. Also true is that neither India nor China can any more take the Maoists for granted, as the Maoists continue to play double not only in local politics but also on maters related with bilateral ties. Difficult task ahead for both the intelligent neighbors. Actually, the instability in Nepal is the result of the insecurity that crept in to the minds of the Indian and the Chinese leadership with the fall of the monarchy. Both China and India, nevertheless, remain puzzled on how to bring Nepal into their sphere of influence? The process appears in progress.

Finally, what if the refreshed Indian regime and China sit together and discuss Nepal situation properly? Take it for granted, Nepali citizens are neither anti-Indian nor pro-Chinese, we want both our neighbors succeed in the international arena and help us attain prosperity that they have already achieved. Above all, we need no further meddling in our internal matters, or else there is the possibility that both will see Nepal turning into a breeding ground for terrorist elements whose spill-over effect will definitely be felt by both the neighbors.

Very true indeed. Christians and Muslims are always the first to take advantage of secularism. We nepalis must wake up to these facts. We must never give up our hindu identity and heritage. Secular state was a "hidden agenda" of Prachanda and some others. They never discussed it in their speeches though before the election. Maoists used trickery to achieve their goals. They used the political correctness of hindus. Now this happened in India ages ago, we should never let this happen in Nepal! Mr Katwal, you know what to do now to regain our almost lost glory. Please do the needful ASAP Katwal.

" secular State was not the agenda primarily" ... how do you know? With the church missionary money flowing into party coffers, specially the Maoist one, it is not that easy to say. It is not just coincidence that missionary activities have exploded.
