Nepal needs no Monarchy: Ex King Gyanendra Shah

TGW

Gyanendra Shah, the former King of Nepal, say sources, in his meeting with the Bharatiya Janata Party President Raj Nath Singh told that he was not in favor of reinstating monarchy in any form in Nepal.

The former monarch of Nepal Gyanendra Shah is currently in India.

He has just met the BJP president, Mr. Raj Nath Singh, Tuesday March 24, 2009.

“I am not in favor of any form of monarchy in Nepal”, told Gyanendra point blank.

Neither Gyanendra criticized the Maoists’ led government of Nepal nor did he ask for the Indian support to reinstate monarchy in Nepal, a vernacular daily quotes its New Delhi sources as saying.

He, however, only defended the Institution of Monarchy by saying that “The Institution of Monarchy in Nepal was completely different than in the manner it is and was being portrayed in each and every Nepali household currently.”

“The Institution was not completely wrong though it ruled for long period of time”, Gyanendra is further quoted by the same source.

The source quoting the BJP President Raj Nath Singh says that the BJP will not interfere in Nepal’s internal matters however, as a good neighbor the BJP will keenly watch Nepal’s political developments.

Mr. Singh also asked the former monarch to divulge his views over the relationship between the ruling coalition partners back in Nepal.
To add, later on Tuesday Gyanendra also met with Jaswant Singh- the former foregin minister of India.

King Gyanendra is expected to arrive home today March 25, 2009 if every thing moves in Delhi smoothly.

Monarchy for many is still an indispensable part of their lives. That the institution that ruled Nepal for close to 239 years is no more will obviously take time to heal for many like me. Frankly speaking if I have to make a choice between the present political parties and the King, I would opt for the latter. However, the downfall of the institution of monarchy was only numbered since Panchayat days when the Kings literally did nothing for the country. It was a golden opportunity for the Shahs to take Nepal to new heights when tow of our giant neighbors were on a path of rapid development. We as a small country between them could have taken numerous opportunities to grow economically. Nepal Army that was only feeding on people's tax money should have been put on developmental work such as infrastructure. Instead the Kings chose to make it ceremonial and only enjoy the 'Salute' and 'Dam' every Dashain!!! Had the country moved on a developmental path since then, today Shahs would not have had to experience this humiliation. Instead, the institution would have been highly regarded as the one in Thailand and Brunei. Democracy is inevitable in any country. The same could have been introduced in Nepal slowly and after the literacy rate had gone up and the Kings then after taken a back seat voluntarily. This was not what the Shahs thought. They thought Monarchy would survive come what may and that the people would continue being their disciples. People had other things in mind. They were sick of being crushed and sick that their could not raise their voice. Now we have the Maoists in power, who in my opinion have come up not through their good deeds but because people had no choice. They took this opportunity to up root the system of Kingship and disappointing that other political parties followed them. Now when they have realized Maoists are going rampant, it has been too late. It was only those 600+ members who decided that Monarchy had to go. It was not 2.8 crores of the Nepali population who decided on the institution's fate. As Nepali's we fail to realize this and we have simply been taking what these political parties are asking us to accept. I wonder why we don't realize that our votes are important and still wonder when will we realize????

Pashupati Shumser Rana , Chairman, Rastriya Prajatantra Party
Political polarization is not there as yet. To remind you, the Maoists have come only after a people’s war but not the rest of the political parties. It could be this factor which may have brought or to come to surface certain differences with the Maoists over some political issues. More..
