Nepali language is the symbol of national unity

Durga Prasad Nepal

Whenever, I see our leaders of the likes of respected Upendra Yadav and Hridayesh Tripathi speaking on Television or delivering a lecture somewhere, I feel that they are speaking Nepali language much much better than we the Pahades- the Khas community. The grammatical perfection, the ease while they speak and the fluency they have in the language is extraordinary---knowing that their mother tongue are either Maithali or Bhojpuri.

Nevertheless, I am saddened these days that our leaders from Tarai have found a sort of enmity to the language and have begun speaking in alien Hindi language. With due respect to all the languages, I have to tell that Hindi is no where spoken in Nepal and in doing so the leaders are doing injustice to their own mother tongue. Maithali and Bhojpuri language are themselves a complete language and a great history they possess. But I believe that the country in the entire is undergoing a drastic and needed change thus such things crop up naturally. I also have the feeling that no one as such can victimize a language be it Nepali, Maithali or Bhojpuri….such acts will only but make the language more strong and the speakers of the language more careful.

I am also of the opinion that in a real rainbow nation like ours there must be a common language to unite people from different language groups, castes and ethnicity. At this point being a realist I do not think that any other language can replace Nepali language. With monarchy gone, the Nepali language is the only way to unite the people of this country. Nepali language is the symbol of national unity.

To tell you more, I like the way Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai presents his views over a debated topic he puts his ideas and points clearly in Nepali language. I, for sure, believe that he loves Nepali language and he also knows how, where and when to use specific words. He has his own style of writing which I love to read.

My association with Nepali language is a sort of family affair and I am only providing continuity to what my ancestors did in the past. However, I personally felt that those who were teaching Nepali languages in our Schools and Colleges were themselves to be blamed for the language lagging thus far behind. Incapable and academically weak people were only to be seen teaching Nepali language –keeping aside a few, this is why I since my teenage was determined to do a masters degree in Nepali Language and teach Nepali the same. I have a master’s degree in Nepali language and specialized in “Definitional Words in Nepali Grammar”. “Winners don’t do different things but they do things differently”. Thus I try to teach my students in a different style.  I tell them to make short comments, to use specific words to describe or define something.  I think they also like the way I teach. I find youngsters these days interested in making in-depth study of the Nepali language---we are moving in the right direction.

I was born in a rural village of the district of Bhojpur. One of my close relative respected Purna Prakash Nepal “Yatri” has made a great contribution to the Nepali language. Our family was ahead in education in our area though the quality of education in our village is still very low. Students who topped the school in the village used to fail in the SLC examination. I for one was lucky to pass the SLC examination in second division. Our school Headmaster, Mr. Kumar Rai is currently a member in the Constituent Assembly---he has contributed a lot to from his side which is why the school is still running smoothly.. NO financial crunch yet. There are mainly, Rai, Brahmin, Magar who used to come to the school. I have a Rai friend who could not complete his education though we passed the SLC examination together and my childhood Magar friends have either joined the Gorkha Army or involved in other business. My father was a strict man who encouraged  me and my five brothers to study hard. He had only one dream and that was all his children one day become highly educated person.

On the system of education, my point is that we do not have country specific education system. That is the primary reason for unemployment and students after education flying abroad in search of jobs. Our education is basically an imported one. Thus there are several flaws in it. In Nepal we give our students the knowledge but we do not give them the needed skill. We do not tell them to love the country; we do not  tell them to stay in Nepal and work for the betterment of their own country. Unless and until we give them the needed skill and concentrate to make their character strong we will gain nothing.

Now to tell you about the Brilliant Multiple Campus, we had a very modest beginning as an educational institution. It was almost nine years back we established it. First year we had just 142 students, the next year we doubled it to 300. Now after nine years in service we have more than 3000 students. I would call it a geometrical progress and the credit goes to all our staff members and the students who have made us all proud. We invite Nepal’s highly acclaimed personalities from several sectors to talk to our students, we do career counseling and we also involve our students in spiritual activities such as meditation and yoga.

Mr Durga Prasad stated talking about, Nepali language is the symbol of national unity. Then he continue about himself and his successful life. He gave name of many minorty pahadi friends who he was associalted with but he is not able bring a single name from tarai, who he was associalte with. Why not? This is time for him as a student of linguist to ask question why Nepali language is not able attract scholar from Maithali, Bhojpuri and Awadi. What are the reasons? Also, as a scholar of “Definitional Words in Nepali Grammar”, there is ample space for him to convince people like myself how close we are with hindi then, Tibtoburman origin language. Readers are not interested on person, but the issue we are facing now.

How poor is the knowledge of this E Mariner who would not hesitate to say that Latin is the dialect of English. I pity on him

Bhojpuri and Maithili are only dialects of Hindi, so why should any one object to its use along with Nepali. Like Sri Lanka, we should also use both the languages. Incidentally neither monarchy nor language has been a unifying factor but the feeling goodwill amongst various sections of soiety towards one another and the pride that they take in being the citizen of Nepal. It is therefore essential that they must feel part of the country and not as alliens.
