Nepal: End of Maoists-UML alliance, Ram Raja likely to be president

TGW

Formally ending the India sponsored unnatural unity, Nepal’s major political parties have submitted their respective nominations for the post of the president and vice-president.

Nevertheless, whosoever wins the post, the first president of Nepal will certainly come from the Madhesi community.

The Maoists have forwarded first republican leader Ram Raja Prasad Singh, the Nepali Congress has Dr. Ram Baran Yadav as its candidate and the UML has forwarded Mr. Ram Prit Paswasn- a Madhesi dalit candidate for the post of the president.

Mr. Singh (73) making a comment after filing his nomination said that he would like to thank the Maoists for their recognition to his contribution for the establishment of a republic in Nepal.

The Maoists and the Madhesh centric parties together proposed the name of Mr. Singh as the presidential candidate.

However, the Maoists have made it clear that the party will not support Parmananda Jha- the vice-presidential candidate forwarded by the Madhesi parties.

The Maoists have proposed Ms. Shanta Shrestha, the UML has Asta Laxmi Shakya and the Nepali Congress has Mr. Man Bahadur Bishwakarma as the candidates for the vice president.

Earlier in the day, July 17, 2008, the Maoists failed to convince the UML to find the common candidates for both the president and the vice president.

The UML spokesperson, Mr. Ram Chandra Jha later talking to the reporters said that the UML-Maoists alliance has ended abruptly and that the party will not become a part of the Maoists led government.
