Nepal’s battle Royale: India favors Dr. Bhattarai, US for Deuba

TGW

Conflicting interests, more so political ones, even bring two close “friends” to clash with each other.

Nepal is the venue where such two diametrically opposing political interests have come to a head.

The said political clash in between the Indian Ambassador designate Rakesh Sood and the American Ambassador, Ms. Nancy J. Powell over which of the two Maoists leaders, Prachanda or Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai or some one else from the Congress, be elevated to the rank of the Nepal’s next Prime Minister.

Koirala has reasons to pull his hairs because he “prefers” to continue as the Prime Minister caring little that he has no “moral” right to continue in the current post.

Prime Minster Girija Prasad Koirala has revealed that the US and India were exerting excessive pressures on him not to allow Comrade Prachanda to occupy the post of the Prime Minster of Nepal.

Both the Indian and the American diplomat’s interest some how or the other converge here so far as Prachanda’s name for the post of the next PM is concerned as both do not want to see Prachanda as the country’s next prime minister.

However, the Prime Minister has also revealed that the Indian ambassador Mr. Rakesh Sood who is yet to present his credentials( he has very freshly presented his credentials today at about 4.PM) and the US Ambassador Ms. Nancy J. Powell have proposed him two different names for the post of the next prime minister.

Prime Minster Koirala, according to the Janaastha Vernacular Weekly dated April 30, 2008, told this to his family members last Sunday April 27, 2008 while they were having a breakfast.

Ambassador Sood has proposed Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai in place of Comrade Prachanda, said Koirala.

“The deshi/bideshi forces fear that the Maoists’ will not give up power easily once they capture it…and there is no constitutional provision to remove them from power either”, added Prime Minister Koirala.

The Weekly further writes that the US was ready to extend any support if the Nepali Congress proposes Sher Bahadur Deuba for the Prime Ministerial post.

“If it is Deuba, we are ready to extend any support to Nepal” said PM Koirala quoting Ambassador Powel.

According to sources, writes Janaastha, “Prime Minister Koirala has already conveyed the choices of two different ambassadors to Comrade Prachanda when they met last time”.

“But how can I elevate them to power as easily as has been suggested by the ambassadors”, Koirala questioned himself during the breakfast.

“However, Prachanda thinks if I elevate Dr. Baburam as suggested by India, as the nation’s next prime minister, it will have profound impact on the Maoists’ party unity and create an imbalance in the party’s chain of command”, added Koirala.

“If not, they suggested me to continue occupying the post” Koirala said adding, “We will join the government only if the formation of current government remains intact”.

Koirala also revealed that “the Maoists’ were in talks with the King through various channels…they (read the Maoists) would like the Militia-Army Integration issue solved by King Gyanendra himself”.

What is the use of having an election if we have to select a Prime Minister with the approval of India or US? The Prime Minister must serve the people of Nepal not India or US. Are we having our election for people’s mandate or for pleasing the foreign Governments? People have already given the mandate. Let the party with largest numbers given chance to lead and this the rule of Democracy.

Girija on moral ground should resign & then the process of new PM may proceed. Sher B. Deuba will be a proper leader for all parties including Maoists. Because he fits with all parties. And Prachand is the peoples choice, but Dr. Bhattarai though very capable but only Indian support can do nothing.
