Nepal: India raps UN’s role; Martin be declared Persona Non Grata

TGW

The UNMIN- the controversial United Nation’s mission in Nepal after facing criticisms locally from various political and public quarters in Nepal for its alleged role in minimizing the role of the Nepal government, is interestingly facing sharp criticisms from India- Nepal’s southern neighbor as well.

Latest reports appearing in India media have it that the Indian establishment has become suddenly serious and thus furious over the UNMIIN chief Ian Martin holding secret meetings with the leaders of the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM) in Muazaafarpur, Bihar, India very recently. Though, later it was disclosed by the UNMIN that the secret meet was based on humanitarian grounds only.

According to reports, only last week Nepal’s Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had also expressed his dissatisfaction over the covert activities the UNMIN was involved in Nepal.

Reportedly, the Prime Minster became furious over the UN body trying to hold secret meetings with various Janajati and Madhesi groups in Nepal, thus trying to ignore the role of the Nepal Government.

It was widely believed in Nepal that the UNMIN was performing as per the instructions of the Indian establishment, mainly aiming at inviting the UN Peace Troops comprising mainly that from India, if security situation further deteriorated. But with the disclosure that India has become anxious and furious over the role of the UNMIN in Nepal, the whole episode has taken a new turn, say analysts.

Ian Martin-the UNMIN Chief in Nepal is widely believed to be a Maoist friendly controversial UN man in Nepal.

Martin is also presumed to have been encouraging various ethnic tribes and sects in Nepal to go on the rampage and thus destabilize the country.

With such “unwarranted” and “unassigned” activities currently being carried out by Martin, analysts suggest the Nepal government-a government basically formed with the overt and covert support from India-to declare him Persona Non Grata and tell him to pack at the earliest.
