Nepal dead CA be revived or not, NC leaders sharply divided

Telegraph Nepal

Debate began among Nepali Congress leaders whether to resurrect the departed constituent assembly or to call for a fresh election to get rid of present political deadlock. The Congress leaders were seen markedly divided at the central committee meeting held August 30, 2012 held at the party headquarters.

In the beginning, President Sushil Koirala briefed the attending CC members of freshly held talks between the three major parties and their joint meeting with President Ram Baran.

Majority of the speakers on Thursday surprisingly rejected the proposition of CA revival.

Bhim Bahadur Tamang, Arjun Narsingh K.C., Mahesh Acharya, Nar Hari Acharya, Bal Bahadur K.C and others rejected the idea tooth and nail.

They were of the view that since the CA term had been prolonged time and again before it ended without drafting the constitution; it is highly unlikely that the same CA if revived will succeed to draft the constitution.

Bimalendra Nidhi and Gopal Man Shrestha on the contrary claimed that reviving the CA is best among all available alternatives only if parties resolve constitutional disputes prior its revival. Both belong to Deuba team inside the congress. There are several lobbies inside the NC.

Ram Chandra Poudel in an indirect manner supported the revival of CA, claim reports.

  • The NC is rapidly loosing popularity and battle at all fronts. If NC claims itself as a democratic party, there is no alternative of fresh elections. The CA is dead, so no question of reviving it. If you can revive CA, why 1990 constitution can’t be revived? Why can't the institution of monarchy that was sidelined without the consent of Nepali people be re-instated? The NC has become Maobadi's tail- it has lost its identity. It a shame calling Deuba, Ram Chandra Poudel like persons as senior leaders of NC. For NC’s revival, these outdated bunches of people should step down and through a fresh General Convention, let a new leadership emerge. At age 65-70, they have no shame claiming themselves as youth leaders. Most of contemporary NC leaders are proven as incompetent and corrupt but among them Deuba is the worst who even doesn't qualify to be a district level leader of any of the parties. Likewise, the NC's General Secretary, who most people believe is a foreign stooge, a foreign spy, if that's true, how he can represent a silent majority of patriot and nationalist element within the party. If NC believes in Democracy, a full fledged multi-party parliamentary democracy, it should fight for holding fresh elections. To move ahead from this prolonged transition, there are only two acceptable options available: either revive 1990 constitution or go for fresh elections seeking people’s mandate. If Sushil Koirala has courage, he should take such a decision that might kill his position but will give a new life to his party. Yedi aant bhaye!
