Twist in Nepal Politics, Thapa-Baidya unity likely for nationalism

Telegraph Nepal

It was expected at the very instant when veteran communist leader Mohan Baidya Kiran preferred to disassociate himself from Pushpa Kamal Dahal led Unified Maoists Party to give a shape to Nepal Communist Party-Maoist- the move will ultimately bring him much closer to royalists.

The happened in a broad day light August 21, 2012, when Chairman Kamal Thapa who is making several moves at a time, also met with Baidya and urged the latter to unite for the cause of nationalism.

The other day Thapa met with Chairman Pushpa Kamal, President Sushil Koirala of NC and UML chairman Jhalnath. And, he has also been making moves for possible unity with royalists turned staunch republicans, Surya B. Thapa and Pashupati Rana led parties.

Thapa after meeting Baidya told reporters, “The country is facing severe threats to national unity and sovereignty. We concluded that we need to unite to preserve our nationalism.”

Spokeswoman Pampha Bhusal of Baidya led party claimed, “We have decided to coordinate with each other on strengthening nationalism.”

Thapa ji also believes that alliance led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been formed to institutionally weaken the foundation of Nepali nationalism as believes Chairman Baidya, but they have reached no agreement as yet to form an alliance, claimed Bhusal and added, they are convinced though that “we need to fight with the anti-national forces together”.

Present at the meeting also was General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ of NCP-Maoist.

By the way, one Baidya confidante has just returned from a secret trip to Delhi. This too must have meaning.

Political polarisation in earnest has begun.Former King must have been smiling.

  • In order to end current political and constitutional crisis knowingly created by current failed politicians there must be broader round-table political conference comprising of all stake-holders including forced sideline monarch. Seeking a political legitimacy through the said conference and obtaining the constitutional legitimacy,is a demand of hour.
