Nepal Apex Court in action, late Girija’s men sent to jail in series

Telegraph Nepal

Khum Bahadur Khadka- a noted corrupt and a disciple of the so-called ‘Shikhar-Purush’ Late Girija Prasad Koirala have been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by the Supreme Court, August 14, 2012.

The SC honorable Justices Baidya Nath Upadhayaya and Kalyan Shrestha in their ruling asked Khadka- an influential member of ‘late Girija team’, to pay a fine of NPR 9.4 million and confiscation of his illegally amassed property worth NPR 9.4 million.

The Court ruling observed that while in power between 1990 to 2002, Khadka had earned NPR 18.3 million of which the source of NPR 9.4 million could not be verified.

The Nepali Congress youth leaders including the once ferocious Gagan Thapa has already raised question mark in the fresh SC’s verdicts where NC leaders have only been convicted on acts of corruption.

Including Khum Bahadur, other core members of Girija team, Chirinjibi Wagle, Jay Prakash Prasad Gupta and Govinda Raj Joshi are serving imprisonment for amassing property illegally.

All the Girija men will have same fate, analysts hope. Girija left for his heavenly abode, March 20, 2010. Rest in peace.

But when will the court begin the hearing of Krishna Prasad Sitaula on Sudan Darfur APC Scam? Why is the delay?

Sitaula is learnt to have gulped most of the amount earmarked for APC to be sent to Sudan.

Why the Nepali leaders speak and demand democracy is becoming clear.

  • I think you are mistaken. Chiranji Wagle was the first NC worker initiating rebellion against Girija autocracy. He was not a core memeber in Girija's kitchen cabinet. While Khum Bahadur was close to Girija, it was only because of his popularity, simpliciaty and leadership quality. Girija used him to the extent he was completely dried and threw him away because he thought that after his death he could challange other Koiralas snatching the NC rein from Korala coterie. I have nothing to comment about court's decision but it's certain that Khum Bahadur was targeted by Girija coterie to smash his rising political career. With this court ruling, several "Chaite Kangressis" and radical element of Nepli politics are rejoicing the verdict. JP Gupta and Govinda Joshi were two opposites, adamant and arrogant in their behaviour faced the justice because of their own creation. During their days at the helm of power, both created enough enemies to fight with. The current verdict is one step forward but there should be rigorous attempt to bring all corrupt politician and civil servant to justice. Otherwise, it would be clear that the cases were filed solely to tarnish and smash the image of a certain political party and wipe out the influential leaders from the political arena. We hope hundereds of current politicians who are reportedly involved in blatant corruption, will face justice. The CIAA has a greater role to reduce if not checked corruption from the country. Big fishes are out and safe, bring them to justice.
