Upon return from attending the Rio+20 Summit in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, Nepal’s Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai held a press meet at the VIP lounge of Tribhuwan International Airport, June 25, 2012.
Here is the excerpt of his interaction with the media:
Mr. Prime Minister what did you talk with Indian Prime Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh in Rio de Janerio?
“The meeting with the Indian PM was quite important. It is normal for an important neighbor like India to express concerns over the state of peace process in Nepal. I told him that we are totally committee to peace and democracy and that there was nothing to worry. I found him quite satisfied”.
Have you come prepared to tender your resignation?
It is so childish. It is like a child is crying to get a particular toy. A Prime Minister’s responsibility is not a toy. And, it is not something you give immediately as someone makes the demand and it is not at all a trivial issue. As far as our interim constitution is concerned there is no alternative to the present government. This government continues until election is held and another government is formed. Thus it is irrelevant to talk of my resignation. However, if we go against the constitution, we may have to witness yet another Magh 19 (February 1, 2005). This government will be replaced by a new one formed after the election.
How has India taken the CA election declared by your government?
This is our internal matter. He only enquired about state of peace and stability in Nepal. And, I found him quite confident.
Parties outside the government have declared that they will not settle for less than your resignation?
A child cries for a while if he does not get his toy. He bangs his head, he cries and gets tired and finally, shuts his mouth. I think the same thing is going to happen here. I advise you also not to get dismayed. This is not a big issue.
Your party chairman has also made commitment that he will make you resign if parties hold consensus?
This is false. Our party is clear that until election is held and next government formed there is no possibility for the present government to go. I will not make any decision that will create another constitutional crisis.
Before going to Brazil you claimed that you will resign if parties hold consensus but upon return you have stood against it. Have you been told by world leaders to stick to the post?
Firstly, I have never said that I will resign. I don’t see there is possibility of forming another government as per the interim constitution. I should be shown a constitutional way to form a new government else you should accept that the new government will be formed unconstitutionally. I would like to rather urge the parties to transform the present government into an all party consensus government.
It is being talked that split in the Unified Maoists happened just because of you?
It is totally false. I do not accept that the party is divided. Some of our friends have gone out because of some differences. They will return time permitting. I do not call it a split.
12 point versus 12 point begins.
The Indian blessing continues. Bhattarai is fortunate enough. But is he?Jai Mata Di...
