Nepal youth to immolate May 28 if ethnicity-federalism prevails

Govinda Bahadur Thapa, a resident of Panauti Municipality, Kavre District declared on Thursday that he will immolate himself if ethnicity is made the basis of federal states.

“I will immolate myself at night on May 28 at 12:15 AM in front of the CA building along with a copy of the constitution if ethnicity is made the basis for federal states”, declared aa determined Thapa while talking to journalists in Banepa of Kavre district.

In the meantime, Brahmin, Chhetri, Dasnami & Dalit protestors clashed with police at various parts of the country on May 10, 2012- first day of the two days closure.

The group has stood against ethnic federalism and has been protesting against listing Brahmin & Chhetri in the others’ category in the constitution.

Whereas police resorted to baton charging and had to fire several rounds of tear gas shells in Pokhara to control the agitating mass, in Chitwan protestors occupied the streets where they sang Bhajans, performed Holy Hawans and sang Dohari.

However, in all the parts of the country their demands were the same “No to ethnic federalism.”

Arjun Baral from Gaidakot declared, “Others might have received huge funds from abroad to get their demands fulfilled but we will make donations to make this Nepal Bundha a grand success.”

In Gulariya of Bardia distirct, locals took to the streets demanding ‘indivisible mid-western region’. Dinesh Shrestha who is leading the campaign told the media that they do not want split between various ethnic groups for the sake of personal benefits.

“We are all brothers, we do not want ethnic federalism which will lead to disintegration of the nation-state”, he said.

  • I wish best Govinda Bahadur Thapa on his self-immolation day! We have been waiting for this day far too long, for last 250 years. I wish all the Buhun-Chettries self-immolate, sooner the better. That will eliminate all the social ills your forefathers/mothers brought to Nepal when they migrated to Nepal. As for Dinesh Shrestha, I bet you don't have the gut to join your brothers, Bahun/Chetries, to self-immolate yourself. That's too bad.
