Talking to a select group of scribes at a private program organized to celebrate his 85th Birthday Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa of Rastriya Janshakti Party ridiculed any possibility of the return of Nepali Monarchy.
“The institution of monarchy will never make a comeback”, he said and added, “The Republican order was established as per the wishes of the general public. We are trying our best to institutionalize the new order. Once decided, there is no going back.”
To recall, Thapa had publicly aired his resentment with the former king Gyanendra Shah for not acting upon his counsels when Shah was ruling the country. Yet Thapa is the one who facilitated the “free travel” of the Indian Ambassadors to interior part of Nepal without providing advance information to Nepal’s foreign ministry. Thapa was then King Gyanendra’s Prime Minister.
It had been reported recently that former King Gyanendra Shah in a rare meeting with Thapa had urged the latter not to bypass the institution of monarchy and Hindu state.
Similarly, Thapa told the media men that even the federal order was impossible to be annuled yet federal order based on ethnic identity was not at all acceptable.
Thapa was also of the view that even if a national unity government took shape, it was impossible to get peace and constitutional processes completed within the deadline.
Thapa is playing double.
“The same leaders will be leading the government even if national unity government takes shape. The country is for sure heading to a crisis”, he concluded.
Happy Birth Day Senior Thapa! All the best to you.
