Nepal’s two renowned human rights activists who were considered close to the Maoists’ quarters in the past together with a UML leader cum human rights activist have jointly approached Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai to guarantee ‘personal security’ to them because they have begun feeling increasingly insecure from the Maoists.
The UN returned Kul Chandra Gautam, senior journalist Kanak Mani Dixit and UML leader/INSEC president Subodh Pyakurel complained to the prime minister that since the Lal Rakshak- a Maoists’ party mouthpiece have declared them ‘peoples’ enemy’ and have been provoking the Maoists cadres against them they could be physically attacked any time soon.
Both Gautam and Dixit were presumed to be excessively close to the Maoists in the past. Wrong presumption!
By the way, Baburam Bhattarai is one of the senior most Maoist leaders.
“The Unified Maoists’ Party leadership will be responsible if any unforeseen event such as an attack is carried out against us”, the three HR activists write in their letter to the prime minister.
They also demanded penal actions against the newspaper and its editor.
“The Prime Minister should make his views over the issues clear in public and manage action against the newspaper and its editor,” the letter reads.
Analysts condemn such act of serving threatening remarks to one of our professional colleagues and HR activists. The State must come into action. Threat and democracy can’t go together. Nepal PM! Now it is your turn to act.Earlier the better. Cool down Maoists!
