SRC differing Federal model for Nepal redundant: Khanal

Telegraph Nepal

The proposal presented by the so-called State Restructuring Commission, SRC, shared jointly by the major parties which has been awarded tasks to suggest an appropriate federal model have been out rightly rejected by  the Chairman Jhal Nath Khanal of United Marxist Leninists.

The UML is the third largest party in the Constituent Assembly.

The Commission was formed on November 23, 2011 to suggest an appropriate federal model but since the members were appointed on the basis of their political tilt they failed to forge consensus in submitting the report.

The commission submitted two separate reports to the government, one recommending establishment of 11 states while the other proposing a 6-state model.

“There is no relevance to the proposal forwarded by the Commission,” said Khanal while he also raised question marks on the expertise of the commission members. The NC and UML tilted members are in minority, preferred 6-State model.

“The country will extract no benefit from their works,” he told Kantipur and added, “The report is nothing more than a plain advice. It could not even simplify tasks already accomplished by the CA’s state restructuring committee. It has rather complicated the problem further.”

NOIDA negative impacts in series. More yet to come.

“The problem should now be taken up at the political level,” he suggested and asked, “Is it possible to drive the country forward on ethnic, linguistic and regional lines? It will rather divide the country even at the grass roots.”

It is also reported that a section of Nepali Congress and United Marxist Leninists leaders met at the private residence of UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and concluded that the proposal for 11 state model divided on an unscientific basis cannot be accepted.

The two parties are yet to make their statements with the commission report revealed.

Differences increasing. Collision expected.
