Nepal was a sovereign nation-state much ahead of Indian republic: Jayant admits

Telegraph Nepal

India’s ambassador to Nepal H.E. Jayant Prasad while addressing a program in Bhaktapur claimed that much before India’s independence (1947), Nepal had been an independent nation.

An informed student of World History.

This he said addressing a program in the district of Bhaktapur, January 27, 2012 at a program organized to celebrate India’s 63rd Republic day.

A section of the Nepalese leaders take the Indian Republic Day as their own national day. Rare magnanimity.

“Nepal formally took shape in the year 1769”, Prasad recalling the glorious-past history of Nepal said.

History and politics will never go together.

The Kingdom of Nepal was founded in the year 1769.

The Indian ambassador told further, “Pandit Nehru mentions Nepal (in Glimpses of World History) being an independent nation in his autobiography.”

“Because Nepal is an independent nation for ages, India had never interfered in the internal matters of Nepal and will not interfere in the future. Nepal has always been free to take its internal decisions independently,” he added.

Can’t be digested Mr. Ambassador for your somewhat jocular remarks. The wearer know where the shoe pinches.

He also told “the sort of system of governance, electoral system and federal system were the issues that Nepalis themselves have to decide. Nepal needs to find a best system for the country and its people.”

To recall, the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Yang Houlan had the other day provided similar advice.  Free suggestions from across the globe will follow soon.

“The model for Nepal’s system of governance should be compatible to the country,” said the Chinese ambassador and added, “Nepal need not copy models found elsewhere not even the Chinese one, instead it should search a model that suits to its needs and as preferred by the Nepali people.”

An admirer of late King Mahendra.

However, the Indian ambassador did not say that Nepal need not copy the Indian system of governance. He also did not say about the NOIDA intervention in Nepal, 2005-6. Perhaps feels ashamed in recalling the India’s dangerous past.

Yet, the remarkably similar advise made by both the envoys, claim critics, need to be taken further ahead in that both the counties should at least unite in matters pertaining to Nepal and save this country from possible disintegration. (Read also Plunging Beijing Diplomacy).

To add: The Nepalese population, more so the local intellectuals including the media have yet to forget the terrible days that they have had during the tenure of Rakesh Sood, Shiv Shanker Mukherjee and Professor Shyam Saran of the NOIDA fame in Kathmandu. Evan the terrible that they all were. The fear remains intact. India’s words and deeds differ, this is the gained experience.

  • Yes! The Indian ambassdor Jayant Prasad can celebrate their republic independence day only into the Indian embassy. Where is the place the Nepalese government provided. Not out side of the any place of Nepal. Who gave that premissions?
