The disheartening news coming from the Unified Maoists’ Party for the Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s detractors is the alliance led by vice chairmen-duo Mohan Baidya ‘Kiran’ and Babu Ram Bhattarai has failed so far to garner majority support in their favor in the central committee.
In the 148 member central committee, so far only 63 members have took part in the signature campaign initiated by the Baidya-Bhattarai mysterious alliance.
Of the 65 (Baidya: 40, Baburam 25) believed to be behind the alliance, 2 are missing. However, to push Dahal to minority the alliance needs at least 75 central committee members in their favor. It is also reported that those who have already supported the anti-Dahal signature campaign have begun withdrawing.
Dahal appears to have already used his unused cards.
Dina Nath Sharma who until the other day belonged to the Bhattarai camp said, “I believe in the scientific power division but since the signature campaign is not in line with Marxist theory, I have declined to sign it”.
It was earlier reported that with General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ too in favor of Baidya-Bhattarai panel it is likely that the target will be shortly reached. Badal panel is yet to sign in the signature campaign.
However, Devendra Poudel of Bhattarai panel tells Annapurna Post that the list that is in his possession will be disclosed only if needed.
“We have the list. We have kept it on hold. We are heading to an agreement where we may not need to make it public”, he added.
On the contrary to the report made by Annapurna post, Rajdhani Daily reports that the signature campaign will continue on Thursday. The Central Committee member Hari Bhakta Kandel on the other hand claims talking to the Rajdhani that by Thursday more than 80 central committee members would have supported the campaign and the number will increase in the days ahead.
Horse trading is perhaps yet to begin.
In the meantime, persistent differences between Dahal and Baidya-Bhattarai panel over their respective stand halted the central committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday July 13, 2011.
The meeting was cancelled because earlier in the morning Baidya who met with Chairman had requested that he needed some more time to carry out home work.
After meeting Chairman Dahal, Baidya headed straight towards personal residence of Babu Ram Bhattarai where vice Chairmen Nayayan Kaji Shresth, Babu Ram Bhattarai, General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa were waiting for him.
“It is likely that the party could opt for a revolt line, but efforts will be put first to break the Baidya-Bhattarai alliance and concentrate on peace and constitution line”, says Barsa Man Pun of Dahal panel.
Chairman Dahal is definitely a shrewd player.
