Osama Bin Laden Killed: Lessons for Nepal and SA from Abottabad

Telegraph Nepal

Ten years after the worst ever terrorist attack carried out in New York that killed close to three thousand innocent US civilians, terrorist leader Osama bin Laden-the mastermind of the ghastly attack was killed by a special force of the US Army in Abottabad of Pakistan, May 1, 2011.

Some sixty Kilometers from Pakistani Capital of Islamabad, Osama-Chief of the terrorist organization Al Qaida, was suspected to have been living in a fortified multi-million dollar mansion since five years  period.

“Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan,” a beaming US President Barrack Hussain Obama said in his late-night statement on Sunday  while formally announcing the killing of Osama bin Laden.

President Obama said “A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.”

The military operation lasted for just 40 minutes.

In the aftermath of the incident fearing possible counter attacks from Al Qaida and similar influenced organizations security have been tightened at various soft targets across the globe.

Security experts in Nepal believe that it is high time for Nepali political leaders to take lessons from the US operation in Abottabad.

“The US has taught the world that there can be nothing important than the national interest and its security. Instead of exhibiting subservient behavior, Nepali leaders should immediately sit together and finalize the National Security Policy, increase numerical strength of Nepal Army, modernize the National Army, stop purchasing and relying on substandard weapons imported from India, for example the obsolete INSAS rifle,  convince India to close the open border- which is beneficial to both the countries and persuade India to stop nurturing terrorist groups operating in Nepal from its soil”, opine matured security experts of Nepal.

“Nepal should also address security concerns of both the neighbors, China and India and not allow our land to be used against any of the immediate neighbors”, experts add.

“More than China, it is India that should help Nepal in becoming politically and economically stable if it wants its security concerns properly and systematically addressed”, conclude experts.

However, experts believe the US operation in Pakistan must have sent spine chilling waves across India’s smaller neighbors in South Asia.

“India- the regional bully could attack anywhere in South Asia under the pretext of safeguarding its security interests”, also say experts. The US has set a dangerous precedence now.

To stop the self declared regional police i.e. India, the South Asian smaller neighbors should devise a collective mechanism or else they all have to face the Indian music sooner than later.

  • @ amit, well amit, i don think the article is an anti-Indian article, however you need to realize that Nepal is always vulnerable to Indian criminals and terrorist due to open boarder between these nations and possibilities of such operation is always there. You cannot ignore what had happened in the past, we do see India as our true neighbor and respect them as well, and all we wish is same respect and love from them towards Nepal. As said"Prevention is better than cure", i guess the article was more directed towards our nation's sovereignty rather than being anti-india. If you consider the thought of protecting our nation sovereignty as an anti-indian sentiments, then i don't have much to say...

  • I support David's veiw, apart from Millitiary power, economic power in form of strong national economy and self sufficiency is utmost important. Unless, we make Nepal a viable enough to sustain in itself, outerside interference is quite obvious. National leader should understand the gravity of this matter. But, what is taught by our leaders is that once the consituition and peace process is over than only the economic issues will be pressed which i beleive is not correct. One can easily notice sea of people wishing to fill KOrean Language Test Exam Form, but no body is bothered to address the root cause for unemployment. If we fail to address the issue at earliest, it make create even bigger problem for country in distant future.

  • Now it is the turn of Brahmin terrorists like Prachnada, Vaidya and Baburam. They pass all the be benefits to their family members and provoke ignorant Nepalese to fight in the name of a new order that is federalism. All PLA and YCL contracts are run by their family members. Prabhakaran gone, Saddam gone, Laden gone. In a month or two Gadaffi will also be eliminated as US is running after him. So hope the days of killers of 20k Nepalese will also be very near. Another good thing is that America is helping Hinduism by killing all terrorists. With ferocious interference of USA in pakistan, the days of militants will be numbered. Good thing is that America is getting hold of terrorist countries like Pakistan. Pakistan supporters beware. Your days are numbered.

  • If any nation wants to save it's sovereignty,it should be united internally. The nationals should remain intact.Any type of discrimination may ignite the disintegration. So it's high time to think properly and provide social justice to all.Americans are mostly united but we are divided on caste and region.

  • Fed up of reading always a monotonous bias article on India. Mr Editor don't you think there is a equal threat/fear from China and even US too in Nepal. But wonder you see India only in each and every of your article and all goes against India only. Why not China and US too. All are predator haunting eagle wanting to dictate nepal and that also gullible weak vulenerable 601 are inducing this desire being a easy prey. Yes there is certainly fear from India and no doubt about it and we are with you on this but when you forget the other side of the story your write up becomes monotonous and vomiting to the reader as the whole stuff appear incomplete and bias.... The main principle for nepal should be "When you can not win your strong neighbour in any aspect, you should think of how best you can reap benefit out of those adverse situation and try to develop your self more powerful than neighbour and then attack. But now it should be a policy of duno sojhaunu for betterment from big giants for nepal... Hope I did not hurt you much...

  • The arguments made in this article is quite of immature character.Nepal already has a huge army to feed.Modernisation of Army may be considered as a possible option but any numerical increase in it's force structure may turn out to be counterproductive.I think the writer needs to do better investigation & research before posting any article.I don't think India would carry out any such cladestine operation in Nepal as there is no such high value target in Nepal for India that would compel it to violate our sovereignty and worsen it's position here.We shouldnot get unnecessarily alarmed by any such event.

  • You are an idiot. Get over anti indian sentiments and try writing about reality. Leave aside your speculation, imagination and hatered when you write an article.

  • Very True, this is high time for SA region to understand the national interest and nation's and national's security above all. Further the article also reveals that we cannot allow anyone to pervade the sovereignty of our nations just for the interest of other nation's security. SA region really needs to learn from this case, most of all nepal needs to take this lesson more seriously than anyone. What USA did to Pakistan for sake of their security, India can do same to us hurting our sovereignty in the name of security of their nationals.

  • ISI(AQ, OBL, many more) and RAW (Mukti Bahini, LTTE, MQM, and NCP Maoists) are two sides of same coin. They know nothing but terrorism.

  • t would also require Nepal to take an objective view of the situation and not blindly blame everything on India. For example the same INSAS rifle is used by Indian Army from Siachen to Kashmir to the North East.It has tackled the most vicious of Jehadi terrorists in Kashmir. The Indian army has put down the terrorists in Kashmir in such a manner that rather than firing Ak-47s they have now switched to throwing stones in streets in desperation.SO how come Nepal suddenly has problems with INSAS?The same Nepalese Army also has Israeli Galil,M-16s,M-4 from USA.Minimi LMG from Belgium. What good did those do to the Nepali Army?A poor carpenter first blames his tools! Needless paranoia building against India serves no purpose.Nepal is NOT Pakistan and its not India's enemy.

  • Uncle Mr Kiran Vidya of Maobadi party looks alike to Mr Bin and seems to be a new version of nepali laden as this uncle vaidya always talks about fight, war, killings, agitation, bandh, disturbanace, jungle and opposes the peaceful way... Viewing all bin laden life and activities can mr kiran give a small space on his war mind a small place for peace Hope he will listen to this baby Chachen suggestion like the peace thought has come to his colleagues prachanda mind though late....

  • Bin Laden never dies , it is a doctrine or ideology which keeps on influencing everyone who love to live with self diginity ,pride and soverginity.Infact it is immortal. He may be terrorist to one part of the world but other part takes him as freedom fighter ,pious soul who struggled to strive freedom for others. Many Bin Laden will keep on emerging unless imapartial perception is not harboured by tyrannts trying to rule world. What is Nepal now ? Is it not a colony ? Kathmandu is more than Bihar where dons and charis fly? Is it safer than Gaza or Bihar ? Editor should come up with more pragmatic news of society than printing hi fi news only.

  • What a sharp critique! and its billion dollars suggestion for Nepal and SA. Both OBL and America were against justice and humanity. America nurtured Taliban and Laden likes at first to defeat the Russian ill-interests. Laden voiced the anger against American ill-interests among Islamic World. Ill-interests and Extremism are causing tremendous harm against humanity. Pakistan is allowing its Air within a limit to America, so that the drone attacks and attack on OBL became possible. As long as a nation controls its border truly (may be it land, air and sea), no foreign Vulture or Dogs can enter that nation. Taking about dealing foreign attacks on Nepal would be stupidity because we do not have BORDER at first and controlling Air is out of imagination of our Army, we have politicians bribed by foreign intelligence agencies, we have imported peoples forcefully provided with citizenship certificate of Nepal.

  • So long as Nepal does not have its own defence policy it can not be considered to be an independent nations even though, unlike Bhutan, Nepal can set its own foreign policy goals. It must have its own arms and munitions factories; and buy from who ever it wishes too --not be limited to India with the highly subsidized, inferior arms and ammunitions- where India can cut off supplies if it so chooses to as happened in 2005. Nepal must also seek to have the China railway into Kathmandu from Lhasa as well as many roads for cross broader trade and commerce. A strong Nepal economically will be more independent than now--and a true buffer force to be reckoned with my both China and India. A National Security Policy enshrined in the Constitution is a must to define Nepal's national interest and its role in regional and global affairs---and to make judicable by the proposed Constitutional Court Thisi way national interest will be beyond party politics
