Greater Nepal is not impossible!

Phanindra Nepal, Lecturer Patan Multiple Campus

He is at the moment a Lecturer at the Patan Multiple Campus in Lalitpur, Nepal.Mr. Phanindra Nepal

He is considered to be a reservoir of knowledge and a commanding authority as regards the “Greater Nepal” theory to which he prefers to call a Movement.

Mr. Phanindra Nepal is working as a secretary to the Border Concern Civil Forum. Mr. Nepal is concurrently the chairman of “Unified Nepal National Front” as well.

He has several books to his credit and many thought provoking articles which have been published in several national and international newspapers.

He is also the author of books entitled “The ABC of Greater Nepal” and “Nepal-Tista to Sutlej”. He has also edited a book on “The reality of Indian encroachment in Susta”.

Last week, we met this nationalist at a seminar and approached for an interview to which he readily agreed-Below the results-ed.

TGQ1: How you Mr. Nepal have been assessing the overall political events unfolding in the country more so after the September Kathmandu explosions? Who could have been behind such blasts? The Terai outfits? The Maoists? Or some unknown groups? Your comments please!

Mr. Nepal: There could be no second opinion that the incidents were inhumane however, the Nepali experience of last decade(s) suggest that it is not that we should take them very seriously but the motive with which the explosions have been carried out must be mulled over seriously. To add, in the aftermath, the two Terai outfits had already taken the responsibility, however, the war of words between the Maoists and the Nepal Army alleging each other for their involvement in the incident suggest that the conflict may entangle further in the days ahead. And it cannot be out rightly negated that if the problem persists for long it may have some negative impact on the Nepali politics as well.

However, I suspect RAW behind this heinous act as it has the majority or better say an overwhelming say in the Nepali politics. It is also known to all that it is only India and India alone that benefits more by keeping Nepali politics in a fluid/fragile and unstable state. And as politics continue to be fluid and unstable, economic activities cannot take its desired course thus the country becomes poorer and poorer. The result is thus what India desires from Nepal.

It is also likely that forces who do not want CA polls in November this year may be behind the explosions. And the reason behind the Terai Groups claiming the responsibility could have been a ploy to provoke the Pahade people to attack the Terai people in Nepal, finally, paving way for India to send its army in Nepal in the name of protecting the Indian migrant community here. This also proves why India has deployed a huge contingent of security personnel along the Indo-Nepal border of late. It is comprehendible why the deployment is not merely to curb terrorist activities but instead India needs as well some plausible reasons such as to protect its citizens in Nepal and thus that would be the mere pretext to enter into the Nepali Territory.

As yet it is only due to the tolerance and intelligence exhibited by the Pahade community living in the Terai, such Indian designs has been averted.

Nevertheless, what Nepal could do is to control the Nepal-India border to stop the arms trade, the arms that are being used against the Pahade community.

TGQ2: As we understand, you had been advocating the theory of “Greater Nepal” for long time in the past? Has the theory died a premature death or you continue in your initiatives for the same? What sort of response you received from the Nepali intellectuals during your campaign? And also tell us what was the response from the other camp?

Greater NepalMr. Nepal: My association with the “Greater Nepal” movement is more than a decade and a half long. I can tell you that “Greater Nepal” was not a matter of discussion in the past, now it has become a major issue in the country’s national level politics- inviting various levels of serious discussions in the Nepali academic sector and beyond. Thus there is no point in saying that the theory has died a premature death. And this issue will continue to survive as long as Nepal does not get its lost territory back-lost because of the Sugauli Treaty.

I can also assure you that the Nepali politics that is presently divided in various fronts will one day be united in favor of “Greater Nepal”. It is also true that each and every Nepali share the pain deep inside their hearts because of the Sugauli Treaty. This pain will continue until we get our deserved rights back. And “Greater Nepal” is the objective of my life and I hope that it will come true during my life time itself if the nationalists co-operate me in my endeavor.

We are trying to move ahead with the motive of transforming the demand for “Greater Nepal” into a movement. In the process, various types of comments have come up, both positive and negative. Some say that India will never give our territories back but I question unless we formally demand how can they give us? It is said that unless an infant cries even the mother sometimes forgets to give the milk her own child.

Talking of our intellectuals now, they are more content with the party tags they shoulder. It is a matter of shame that intellectuals here toe a party demand, thus the movement for “Greater Nepal” does not, let me admit, at present suit to any party line. Just think, our leaders who even do not impart a single word in protest against continuous land encroachment by the Indian side, how would they demand the return of our illegally occupied lands by the Indian side? And the so called intellectuals would also not dare to cross the party line but recently some independent thinkers have come up in support of our movement. A great encouragement for us indeed!

It is for sure that the Indian side fears the movement for “Greater Nepal” originating from the Nepali soil. This has indeed become a matter of headache from them. They fear one day this movement may drag international attention which it would ultimately. If we get our lost territories back, Nepal’s eastern periphery can extend up to Bhutan and Bangladesh. This implies that the Indian controlled eastern states will finally detach themselves from the Indian Union-the colonial offshoot of British Raj. Thus the separatist groups waging movement for independence such as NAGA, ULFA, BODO and others in India could benefit from the movement of “Greater Nepal”.

Finally, India will have only one option left and that is to shape a treaty with Nepal to take Darjeeling in lease and Nepal in return could ask for extending its territory up to the Bangladeshi Border.

I now feel that the Eastern states in India are thus nearing their Independence.

TGQ3:  Media reports say that Indian side has been constantly encroaching upon our lands in different parts of the country. However, the political parties, radical communists included, do not utter a single word in favor of their own country? How you take their silence?

If so then, should we demand the outright abrogation of the Sugauli Treaty of 1815? Given the fact that India is expanding her territories by intruding our lands, would it be a befitting response to India if we talk of the abrogation of the Sugauli treaty?

Mr. Nepal: The frequent media reports that the Indian side is encroaching upon our land are not at all fabricated events. In reality, the Indian side has been exceeding all the limits and there is not a single adjoining district in Nepal that has not faced continues Indian encroachment, to say the least.

To boot, we have lost almost 372 Square Kilometers in Kalapani area where the Indian military has a camp since Indo-China war of 1962 wherein India embraced a shameful defeat. More over, our territorial claims reach up to 17 Kilometers far from Kalapani. Add to this, some 20, 000 BIGHAS( approximately 13,000 plus hectares in metric system) of Nepali lands have been currently under Indian occupation in SUSTA area in Nawalparasi district. The list might go long of such encroachments in different parts of this country.

More perplexing is the response from the Nepali side. More so, the silence exhibited by the political parties and the so-called Maoist revolutionaries’ included is indeed surprising. This surprising silence is more intriguing. For me, silence is a sign of agreement or acceptance. Thus, I am forced to conclude that they have provided their positive nod to this Indian act of threatening our sovereignty. Which is also a proof that India itself is not abiding by the clauses of the Sugauli Treaty thus there is no point that the Nepalese alone should go by the clauses of the treaty. Thus India reminds us time and again that the Sugauli treaty is no more valid as they continue to intrude our territory.

In reality, the treaty became null and void right on 14th August 1947. Had we been smart enough to get back the lands that we loosed through the treaty of Sugauli during the 14 to 15th August, the entire lost lands of the Nepal would have been in our possession since then. But we failed. The fact is that from 14 till 18th August, 1947, the lands which we lost under Sugauli treaty could have been secured. To be precise, Darjeeling was under the command of Pakistan and a Pakistani flag was fluttering there till 18th of August*. (Read Status of ceded land of Darjeeling and Leasehold of Kalingpong by Rukesh Mani Pradhan) For the Pakistanis, they took over Darjeeling for it was an area that was adjoining East Pakistan then. But India became suddenly sensitive to this Pakistani overtures and instantly took hold of Darjeeling forcibly in order to secure its attachment with the Northeast which incidentally adjoined East Pakistan then.

Though India commands authority in Darjeeling in the East and Kumaon Garhwal in the West, however, the right of Nepal to claim these lands remains sovereign and valid till to date. Nepal, logically, can even now demand those lands from India. To me India which believes in expansionism and the one who enjoys sadistic pleasure in grabbing others’ property and money are similar both in content and nature.

TGQ4: Many academics in Kathmandu see the influence of India in our internal affairs and that too in a brazen manner.

Do you see such influence in Nepali politics by India or it is just a rumor only? If yes, then why India is dictating its terms and conditions on practically each and every political issues? Is our leadership that weak not to withstand the extraneous pressures? Your comments please.

Mr. Nepal: There is not only the Indian influence in Nepali politics but there is clearly an intervening Indian role in our internal matters. It is not just a matter of gossip but not to say so would be improper in effect.

Recently, the Indian ambassador to Nepal Shiva Shankar Mukherjee celebrating the Indian Independence day in Kathmandu said that “November 22 CA elections” must be conducted at any cost. Similarly, in 1992 the arrival of Chandra Shekhar and his remarks made at Ganeshman’s residence about King Birendra heralded a new era for India’s naked intervention in Nepali politics which continues even to day which is there for all to see.

Indians want those political parties in Nepal to succeed that serve well their objective to impose their directives frequently through their handpicked political men.

In reality, the Indians act as a mentor and thus reprimand our leaders and our leaders consider themselves fortunate to be their slaves.

The Indian mindset is such that they consider it their inherent right to interfere into our internal matters and this has become possible only because our leadership readily accepts such interference. Some times I also feel that India is not to be totally blamed. We have several examples of our own leadership publicly admitting their Indian lenience. Therefore, our politics is much weaker than our own perception. There is no National Agenda and Rigidity over any issue that warrants national attention. They are merely pawns at the hands of foreigners. Until and unless we have leadership a la “Mir Jaffar and Lendhup Dorje”, Nepal will remain ever as an Indian colony or at best a Protectorate.

We need such leadership that is more responsible to its own citizen and the country. Nepalese leadership should fear the wrath of its own citizen rather than fearing India.

Unless our leadership gets rid of the mindset that without India’s blessings they cannot acquire influential positions in Nepal, the Indian will continue to influence, interfere and intervene into our politics.

TGQ5: After the restoration of parliament by the King, what prompted the Seven Party Alliance along with the Maoists to bring in the new citizenship bill?

Mr. Nepal: For me it was a move to threaten the very sovereignty of Nepal as a nation state as a whole. As the restored parliament passed the citizenship act the provision for granting citizenship to any one born in Nepal was accepted thus India benefited the most which meant that India gained through its citizen’s acquiring Nepalese citizenship. In a few years time the situation will be such that the population of the Nepali of Nepali origin will be dominated by the Nepali of the Indian origin, thus real Nepalese will be in minority in their own homeland. Which also implies that now on the Indian Immigrants who now have the Nepali citizenship could influence greater say in Nepali politics. Finally, the Indian design of seeing Nepal becoming Bhutan first and Sikkim later is taking a formal shape.

And I also foresee a final standoff between the Indian migrants and the real Nepali population in Nepal very soon. Thus, to save our independence we must fight.

  • I am very frustrated that even nepalis dont support "great nepal".Every true nepali should support by his/her heart. This is not a threat or anything. We cant ask for our lost right?? The land is 100% of us and there is no way it is of india.Once subash ghising debated against it ,and indian government didnot respond because they had no proof to show the land is theirs :) :) Shame on indian government +nepal politicans ! what a disgrace to earth are you ! I understand that people say 'its too late' ! haha,"greater nepal is our birth right ,its in heart of every true nepali" For example,a man lost 1 billion dollar in bank as bank got closed. So you mean he doesnot have the right to ask for his money ! haha stupid minded people Even though money cant be compared with this, its blood and our identity Gopal yonjan(nepali musican, writer and singer) from india :) has said in his song "hamra ragat le koreka sima metera metidainan" means, the land made by our blood cant be erased by erasing.. Its not a matter of supporting or not supporting ,but its our right to get that land and we will do anything for it later you nepali people who dont support this are son of india,go in india and die.you dont deserve to be nepalese

  • I am a Nepali and this idea of greater Nepal is just plain silly. Let India and Nepal focus on eliminating poverty from our countries in the next generation. Let us work to become prosperous nations instead of fighting over territory. Let us educate our women, build highways, bullet trains, skyscrapers. Let us eliminate corruption. And lastly let us live with respect for each other. Let us learn to respect each other's identity and territory. Nepal and India have a unique relationship in the world. We have a similar Hindu/Buddhist heritage. We have similar people living on both sides of the border. Indians have Pahades in Sikkim, Kumaun, Garhwal who are similar to Chhetris and Brahmins of Nepal. Indians also have Buddhists in Himachal, Arunachal Pradesh and Laddakh who are similar to Nepali Buddhists in all respects. Again we have people in the Terai who are similar to Indians of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Now are we to go and ask these people to join Nepal? This idea is just silly. The world is coming together and borders are melting. Countries will probably not have any defined boundaries by 2100. Let us preach love for all humanity. And Indians also need to learn that just because Nepalis are poor and Nepal is a small country, does not mean that Nepalis can be treated poorly. Indians have a harsh way of speaking with the innocent Nepalis from the hills and Terai who go to India to work or study. This creates a resentment in Nepalis against all Indians. Indians also have to stop racism against fellow Indians like North Indian/South Indian, Aryan Indian vs Indians from the North West etc. Nepalis also need to learn to respect Nepalis from the Terai. Let there be peace between India and Nepal. Jai Nepal Jai Hind!

  • You need to have ur so called "Greater Nepal" in Tibet, don't u dare to look at my home Uttrakhand as a part of ur day dreams, we consider nepalese as our friends but people like u are danger not for India(coz we don't give damn really) but for Nepal, a country of beautiful people.

  • Hello there, I am from Uttarakhand, claimed by you as part of Greater Nepal. Most people here think Nepal is a small unimportant country as we have Nepali work migrants here. No one wants to be part of Nepal here. Instead of this, think about who your real friend is. Only India shares the same religion, related language etc..

  • I am a Canadian of Nepali origin. I am shocked to read the interview of Mr Phanindra Nepal. If Mr Nepal, would have been a patriotic person with impeccable integrity, he would never have made such foolish demands like Greater Nepal. I have a strong feeling that he might be under the influence of anti-Hindu intelligence agencies like Pakistan\\\'s ISI, whose sole dream is to make Hindus fight with each other, weaken them and then convert them into Islamic Jihadis. They want to convert the entire subcontinent into Jihadi bastion. I am ABSOLUTELY sure that most of the comments that have appeared here supporting the Greater Nepal cause, have been made by a handful of anti-Hindu Pakistanis....thet just changed their names and written various comments. My request to my Nepali brothers is, please do not fall prey to the Jihadi designs of the Pakistanis. We have an extremely strong religious, cultural and racial bonds with Hindus from India. India has always treated us as a respected brother. We have a special status as a neighbor, which no other neighbor of India enjoys. We do not need Visa or Passport to enter India. We can buy property in India. We can work freely in India, without Work-permits. Every year, India gives us large developmental assistance worth millions of dollars. We can go and settle in any Indian State. We can study in any Indian school. We have a special place in Indian Army, as we Gorkhas are fiery fighters. The Pakistnis do not like this fact and hence they are trying to provoke us and Gorkhas to rise against India. Ultimately, it is Pakistan, we will benefit in all this. Countries in Europe have broken their border barriers and have formed economic unions. We too can aspire to form an economic union with India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and India, and can still maintain our sovereign independent status. It will be foolish to assume that Greater Nepal idea will succeed. First of all, not even 1% of the citizens residing in those areas claimed by us would agree to join Nepal. There will extremely strong resistance to join Nepal. Who would want to join our country and leave India, when we are a poor land-locked country and India is a rising Super Power, with fourth strongest military in the world and also the fourth largest economy in the world in PPP terms. We can not afford to invite the wrath of India. Without India\\\'s support, we will collapse within a few months. As we are a land-locked nation and as we have a very small economy due to our mountainous terrain, we should collaborate with India, join hands with India to share the prosperity. Keep off the Jihadis and madrassa educated Taliban-mindset-Pakistanis from interfering in our affairs. They are evil forces, just want to divide us Hindus, weaken us and then convert us into Jihadi satans.

  • I AM INDIAN CITIZEN, BUT I THINK, ALL THE TREATIES BETWEEN INDIA AND NEPAL HAS TO BE ON EQUALITY GROUND AND NEPAL IS SEPARATE NATIONS MAY BE SMALL ONE. IF NATION IS SMALL IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE SHOULD HUMILATE AND ILL TREAT THEM. INDIA BEING THE EMERGING POWER IN THE REGION, WE SHOULD ADOPT POLICY OF EQUALITY WITH NEPAL. NEPALI PEOPLE ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR HARDWORK, SINCERITY AND HONESTY ACCROSS THE WORLD. WE SHOULD NOT DO ANY ATTEMPT TO SHOW THEM LESSER THAN US. I AM SURE ALL THESE STEPS TAKEN BY INDIAN GOVT WOULD A LONG WAY. AND OTHER SIDE NEPALI FREINDS ALSO SHUD NOT KEEP HATING INDIA INSTEAD THEY MUST CONCENTRATE ON THEIR WELL BEINGS. DELHI SHOULD NOT TREAT NEPAL AS YOUNGER BROTHER AND BOSSED ON THEM INSTEAD THEY SHOULD BE TREATED AS A FRIEND ON EQUALITY GROUND. FURTHER I ALSO OPINE THAT GREATER NEPAL IS NOT THE REALISTIC THING IN PRESENT SITUATION. AND INDIA ALSO SHOULD NOT ENCHROCH ANY LAND OF NEPAL.

  • Have you forget that the great emperor of India Ashok was unable to invade Nepal? Mr Raja the kiranti king Sthunko had dismantled the horse built on the top of the Ashok Pillar in protest of the Ashok for erecting the pillar within the Nepal without getting the permission of the then Nepal. In the case of failed state I humbly request you to remember the famous Asian proverb while you are pointing the index finger the remaining four fingers are pointing towards you. At least we are proud that our brave forefathers had successfully repelled the colonial power from our territory when India was falling to their hands.

  • Greater Nepal should be taken seriously. Greater Nepal is not the matter of only talks. India have to Guarantee Nepal its territory other wise International court is still available. If that fails too Nepal should not wait but to allies with China, Russia and declare a war on India no matter what, before international community arrives China, Nepal and Russia will conquer India with no trouble. Then we will get Greater Nepal and the coasts of India too.

  • DON'T CALL CHINA FOR A HELP, IT DOESN'T DESERVE TO INTERFERE IN THIS MATTER:- India is the perfect example for unity in diversity.. there are 1652 languages and dialects spoken here with a billion plus population India is doing a lot to improve the standard of living of her citizens.. She is already a global player.. and moreover India respects all her regional languages by creating linguistic states. so a sense of belongingness has been created among all the linguistic minority. so all the major languages of the region were well represented in the national level.. THAT IS WHY INDIA STILL EXIST AS A SINGLE ENTITY.. but in the case of CHINA (NEPAL'S CLOSEST NEIGHBOR)they impose "simplified chinese" on all the ethnic groups of that vast nation. so people in china don't have that sense of belongingness.. rather they still exist as an unified nation only because of her military might.. India is a democratic nation, her people enjoy an absolute liberal environment.. but china has more problem in Uighur, Tibet and Inner Mongolia.. in all these regions now Han Chinese form majority of the population suppressing the locals.. so china is not a rightful nation to support your cause..

  • GREATER NEPAL IS IMPOSSIBLE:- Just one hand alone cannot make noise.. here in this case no one in the REGIONS YOU CLAIM FROM INDIA FOR GREATER NEPAL ARE NOT SUPPORTING these claims... only you people in Nepal that too less than 20% of your population support this.. no one In the Indian side will go with your undeveloped nation.. because India is already a global player.. her economy is still increasing by about 8 or 9% a year.. WHAT DOES NEPAL HAS GOT TO ATTRACT INDIANS TO GO AGAINST INDIA?? really your claims are childish...

  • My suggestion to Dhotti Bhais is that at the end of the day the voices or to be more precious the cries, of Nepalese, must be heard and taken into consideration. It is a matter of common knowledge that Imperial India is an off-spring of Imperial Britain and New Delhi is hould the so called Bharat Barsa, which any educated man in India would know is a mythical land, or to be more clear Hindustan by the use of force. Also, Imperial India considers itself as a democratic country but it has not been able to demonstrate the world its commitments to democracy. Holding a whole nation hostage with the threat of force is far from practicing the principles of democracy and it is with this method of terror you have been ruling ethnic Nepali people in Darjeeling and Sikkim. If you consider yourself as a democratic nation why not you held a referendum and see if ethnic Nepali people, who make majority in Darjeeling and Sikkim, would like to be subjected by India or aspire to be freed and be unify with the motherland Nepal. So, please be so kind and show your commitment to democracy and respect the will of people for self-determination. The Bharat Barsa of which you talk only existed in books of myths where a army of monkeys defeat human in war, and any educated Indian would know about it. having said that I must add another fact that the Imperial India was united by the British colonizers. Before British rule the present day India was never a single empire and any educated Indian would agree with it. because of the imperial ambitions of New Delhi, Nepal as a nation has been divided into two much in the same way as Germany had been divided into two during Soviet era. The result is that millions of ethnic Nepali Nepali people against their will are forced to live under the occupation of Imperial India. So, as a democratic nation, Imperial India must respect the will of Nepalese leaving in Darjeeling and Sikkim to unify with the motherland. After all you can not use force to prevent your brothers, sisters and sons from their wish to get their inheritance and leave separately. That is the bottom line.

  • Mr. Nepal, its rather silly to claim Shimla, solan, dehradun, nainital, chardham sites and even east UP like prachanda or other jokers dream today. The people here are not non-nepali migrants but local kumaoni, garhwalis, gujjars, awadhis etc. They have no interest in nepal and fully integrated into India. Himachal offers the best living standards in India and Varanasi is million plus city. Does prachanda have the stuff to run these? Uttarakhand is also promising and has brightest future among our new states. Bihar has made our economy proud in just 5 years by an 11 % growth darjiling demands a state out of west bengal, not out of india. Sikkim is more literate and wiser than anyone or any place in nepal and has been wholly made Indian since it joined us, also its Chief Minister Pawan Chamling is a gem of a person just like our PM and has taken the state to grand heights. Now why would any of these wish to go for Nepal? And Pakis, stop interfering in nepal's affairs, just worry about Taliban (I love all of them).

Bharath Varsh is a proof for that. afghanistan, pakistan, bangladesh, sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan chagos archipelago and myanmar used to be a part of India at one point of time. that doesn’t mean that India can go claim those territories… so be with your remaining territory and try to develop your country…

  • There is no doubt that from both the historical and legal perspective Nepal still maintains the claim for those territories mentioned in this document/forum. The treaty of Sugauli of 1916 between the kingdom of Nepal and British East India Company serves its basis. There is no doubt that Nepal has every right to claim those territories from both the British and its off-spring India. I think that the Nepal government can take this issue to both the United Nation and The International Court in Hague so as to rise the issue. This help high light the problem in international arena. However, given the political situation in Nepal and the petty ambition of those who live in Kathmandu by playing politics I doubt it is possible. For it is universally known to us that most professionals who make living by playing the dirty games of politics in Kathmandu are agents in pay roll of Indian Establishment. We have sufficient proofs that Girijha Koirala and his lackeys, Sher Bahadur Deuba and his lackes, Surya bahadur Thapa and his lackeys and Madhav Nepal and his lackeys are in pay roll of Indian Establishment. Please go to New Delhi and ask Yogal Sharma and Mani Kumar Subba if you need more information in this regard. But this is not the end of the world. I am not yet sure but I think we can always look for alternatives. For example, making a petition and lunching a signature collection campaigning throughout the world and presenting the case to both the international court in The Hague and the UN Security Council is one option. The second option can be lunching a referendum in Nepal to this effect and presenting the case to the above said international bodies. Also, I think that all patriotic Nepali should condemn those who has been ruling it for the past 60 years with the blessing of New Delhi. For example, BP Koirala and his lackeys were in hurry of grabbing ministerial portfolio in Mohan Shamsher led government than getting back the lost territories. In the same magnitude Tribhuwan Bahadur Shah, Mahandra Bahadur Shah and his lackeys were in hurry to get more economic privileges and political power than getting back those territories. Let us not talk about Girijha Koirala, Surya Bahadur Thapa, Sher bahadur Deuba, Madhav Nepal, Prachanda and their lackeys who are in the pay roll of New Delhi. These people should be condemned and punished for treason. I wish Nepali people take courage to bring these semi-literate corrupt thugs to a tribunal. Behind bar is where they belong. At the same time for taking the courage to bring this matter to light Dr. Nepal deserves respect, honour and love of all Nepali. Let the vision of greater Nepal be realized soon. Long live greater Nepal. Let India take hands off Nepali territories.

  • We talk about Greater Nepal, Why not talk about Greater Asia or South Asia. Breaking a part of one country to make another, be it India or Nepal does not seem proper. We should think of joining a big confederation of Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh even burma to form a single country. Give it name Nepal or India or Anything . Nothing in name, travelling around in 4000 KM land without visa and be brothers. I am in favour of Greater Nepal from Pak to Burma and Bhutan to Sri Lanka. Tibet on Northern side will also be a good to part of it. Long live Greater Nepal.

  • thank you P. Nepal sir,for making all the nepalese clear about the treaties done between nepal and britisher as well as the treaty between nepal and india which clearly prove that india is illegally occupying the territories from tista to sutlej river, many people even donot know the base'sugauli treaty'standing on which india is ruling the nepal territory is itself void and null from its article no 9.in that article it is clearly mentioned that the treaty will not be valid until it is signed and ratified by the then king of nepal, but in fact it was not signed and ratified by the king of nepal that means we have never give our land to india or britisher, india is occuping the nepalese territory forcefully not legally.although india is ruling the nepali territory saying the sugali treaty is valid infact which is void and null, after the british raj ended it must be return to nepal according to the international law of colony rule passed by UNO.moreover india has itself return it back legally after 1950 peace and friendship treaty's article number 8,but india is ruling in the nepalese territory illegally today as well.all the neighbour country of india are sufering fronm india.it has a border dipute not only with nepal but also with pakistan , bangladesh, china, srilankaand even myanmar.india wants to be super power till 2020,but by giving problems and having big dispute with the neighbouring countries can it be super power country?no , it will just be one of the failed nation in the world unless there is the help from the neighbours.if this kind of bullshit india shows with its neighbour countries non of the neighbour country helps india when it faces trouble from other countries like iraqi face from america rather india should face the wrath of its neighbour countries who one day ,i m sure will unite against india.and that day india cannot hold the wrath of its neighbour n break into pieces and pieces.not only the neighbour countries but also the kashmiri people, nagaland people, assam people will be in this unity because they even facing the same problem what nepal, china, pakistan ,bangladesh, srilanka is facing, their land is being ruled illegally by india.

  • I support greater Nepal movement .We have National freedom army to fight.
  • Posted on - 2009-06-17    by     sk
  • We should be able to fight in higher level. I think Indians don't know anything about this. They should know that we are all aware that they are trying to suppress us. You all should bring this in international level and fight it and remember India is bigger from all the side so it is going to be tough to fight with them. All other countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka, China should help us. Our political leaders are of no use. This issue has not gone further than this so let's bring further than this.

  • What Nepal and Nepalese must do to protect Nepali borders and demand for greater Nepal? (1) Nepalese must Unite and establish official movement SAVE NEPAL & Greater Nepal. Not only, Nepali government is poor, and Nepalese people must take responsibility in advance. (2) Establish social political and social Awareness about Nepali borders problem and Indian encroachments of Nepali borders. Border villagers as well as city people of Nepal must know the seriousness of border problems. (3) Operate or run social organization against Nepali border encroachments by India people, Police and SSB Army. (4) Mass communication about border encroachments to Nepali government, political parties, and people and thru News Medias. (5) Nepali government must establish special border patrol police force for secure borders, control illegal activities, crimes, poaching, human trafficking, smuggling etc. Nepali special border police must have patrol automobiles, arms, communication equipments, border maps, border tracks, border post, central command centers and emergency support systems. Border police patrol border day and night in daily basis in specific patrolling zones or areas. When presence of Nepali police or army around border side will discouraging border encroachments by Indian people, police and army. It definitely works.

  • Nepalies should take over their lands, before they are solely over taken by the Indians, as they would stop at nothing for the achievment of their ultimate goal of MA-BHARAT. fortunately this theory of greater Nepal not only falls in the Interest of many Independence prevailing movements through out India but also its niegbouring countries specially, Bangladesh, Bhuttan and goes without saying Pakistan. If the change has come to the Minds of Nepal, then the change has come to the lands of Nepal.

  • Hats off to Mr.Phanindra Nepal! Nepalis, no doubt, deserve a GREATER NEPAL as the treaty of Sugauli, 1816 was turned void with the departure of the British and their wicked Company from the sub-continent. And then there is Article VIII of the treaty of peace and friendship, 1950 which unambiguously states that all treaties and contracts entered on behalf of India between the BRITISH Government and the government of Nepal have been cancelled. Nepal has every right to get back its terrorities ceded to the cruel British in 1816. Pakistanis support the claims of Nepal on its snatched land!

  • I think demand for greater nepal will only fulfill if we gorkhalis living all over the world know that it's our right to rule our land by ourselves not others and to fulfill the dream of greater nepal we have to bring awareness among all nepalis living inside and outside of nepal.
  • Posted on - 2008-12-24    by     Prakash Thapa
  • We are with u sir. only one thing i want to say, we can die for our greater Nepal, We are Gorkhali they should know it.
  • Posted on - 2008-12-14    by     Bikram
  • First and foremost, we should be prepared to make all Nepalese including those in abroad understand the fact that those territories lost on and by the Sugauli Treaty are no longer any parts of India since this treaty had already been null or void by the Indo-Nepal Friendship Treaty 1950(Article 8) after the British Raj. We should be able to educate our people in very plain language with no confusing points. We should be able to make our people specially from Terai beleive that this is very possible! Make networks within your reach (your co-workers, friends, relatives and everyone around you). Start writing articles and spread it to international media. Knock every organisations door, be it governmental or not. Support all Gurkhas (Indian, Singaporian and British) to support the campaign. Think Positive, This is possible!!!

  • The map shown in the article is not complete. The eastern and western part shown in the map is correct, but the southern part is not complete, in the south it should be extended till the river Ganga. You have missed the part of Mithila in India, part of Awadh and Magadh in India. Those part in India wrer of Nepal before Sugauli treaty.

No other country should rule our land. It's just a matter of time that everything will bring this movement to a success. Join hands everybody!
