India behind the Terai agitation, Maoist

Kathmandu: Nand Kishore Pun-the deputy commander of the Maoists party has in a thought provocating article printed in Naya Patrika dated 10 August Friday, has said that it had become urgent and necessary to understand first as to what were the reasons and the forces behind the scenes for the escalation of the current Terai crisis prior to going for the solutions to these issues.

“Who is maneuvering the crisis? Why the issue has been provided such a dimension? And for what purpose the issue has been highlighted in a manner that it does not demand necessarily? These are the questions which demand serious attention and got to be analyzed first, Pun says. We must go into deep, Pun adds.

The manner the problems and issues have been raised in the Terai, it is not difficult to understand the tacit presence of the Indian political maneuverings, the senior deputy commander of the ex-rebels further says in the article penned by him.

The fact is that India does not want to see the elevation of the Maoists in power in Nepal and thus has hired some “pseudo nationalists” from some Madhesi outfits in order to create disturbances in Terai, Commander Pun continues in the write up.

The other reason is that since the Indian establishments knew that the Maoists have had a strong base in Terai/Madhesh and thus through various means the said establishment wanted to dismantle the Maoists stronghold in the Madhes, adds Pun further.

“India’s policy towards Nepal was not only to dilute the Maoists strength in the Terai region, but also hidden is the fact that India concludes that only when the Maoists base is a weakened one in the Terai belt, she can then only impose her unilateral dictates be it political, and economical as well on a overall weakened Nepal”, Pun presumes.

“India in effect does not want to see the Nepali nationalism to grow and increase because India knows in such a case she can not impose its dictates on Nepal as it has been doing”, Pun writes in the article.

Unfortunately, Nand Kishore Pun laments that some of the political parties, for example, the NC and the UML, danced to the tune of India to the extent that Nepal’s nationalism has been put to a litmus test.

We have already seen the Indian “Imperialist” behavior in Bhutan and that Indian ambition is to weaken the smaller neighbors and impose its dictates on them.

Most revealingly, the deputy commander Pun says that the Party had already suspected the very intentions of the Indian establishment the day Matrika Yadav, Suresh Aley magar and Upendra Yadav were arrested by the Indian government wherein only the first two were handed over to the Nepal government and the third one was kept in the Indian jails for some time only to be released later.

Nand Kishore Pun says that this very particular “case in point” speaks so many things unspoken.

Analysts here conclude that the Maoists party too possesses several staunch “nationalists” who conclude that India will never allow Nepal to remain politically stable, economically independent and the likes only to extract political benefits from a weakened Nepal.

Nevertheless, Mr. Pun urged the parties in alliances to devise a scheme on a “unanimous basis” and go to the Terai in order to address the Madhesi grievances.

“Our proposition for a federal structure is not to bring about a vertical split but to consolidate the nation”, he concluded.

Is Mr. Pun’s India provocating expressions were of his own or he was voicing the inner feelings of the entire Maoists paraphernalia will have to be watched, say analysts at telegraphnepal.com

Certainly, if it were the views of the Maoists party itself, then India will certainly devise some other “handy” schemes “as usual” to “tame” the increasing Nepali “nationalism” in Nepal- more so in the Maoists party- to which they dub as “anti-Indian” stances. No wonder, the said handy scheme would be used by India’s tested and tried stooges that are aplenty in this country.

Analysts fail to understand as to why India fears the growth of nationalist feelings in Nepal? This is puzzling phenomenon indeed. Fear psychosis has no medication available in the world.

In yet another write up, one Maoist leader who is the valley in charge of the YCL-Young Communist League-Mr. Chandra Bahadur Thapa alias SAGAR too ventilate his ire towards India. He also makes his views clear from the same paper as did Pun.

YCL chief Sagar says in Naya Patrika dated 13th August that the party has been watching closely as to how some diplomatic envoys have been dictating their terms on us. Look what he says, “India has been the main hurdle for Nepal’s overall development for that particular country does not allow us to build infrastructures, factories which could be run through the use of our own raw materials”.

“It appears that India is present on both sides of the border”, Sagar laments. (For details read Naya Patrika dated 13 August-ed).

All these put together what come to the fore is that India very steadily losing its political base in Nepal. This also forces analysts to conclude that there is no dearth of nationalistic section in the Maoists party as well which is perhaps increasing exponentially over the recent days and weeks.

Its corollary would be to conclude that the recent secret meeting of the Maoists top duo, Prachanda and Dr. Bhattarai in Gangtok, July 27, with the RAW top hats summarily failed. Does this mean that, by implication, Chinese influence is increasing in Nepal?” Who knows what is being cooked up in Kathmandu’s notorious kitchen? By all accounts, India is losing its political clout in Nepal.
