Supporting or interfering?

Niraj Aryal

Who can forget those remarks by James F. Moirarty, wherein the US ambassador while supporting the Lokatantrik men in agitation had predicted that the days for the King are numbered in his Kingdom, condition if the King continues to make regressive moves?

The US ambassador James Moriarty had put his words like this, "The King of Nepal must act fast to save his crown. I have a gut feeling that ultimately the King will have to leave if he does not compromise. And by ultimately I mean sooner rather than later the King will lose his kingdom, if he does not move fast". Similarly in an interview with the CNN, Moriarty had said "US did not want to see King Gyanendra forced to flee clinging on the wings of a helicopter".

Perhaps there are two ways into looking at his statement. One is obviously a support from a friendly country in times of crisis to its people. On the other, perhaps, can call it an unnecessary meddling but nothing else!

Perhaps much ahead of Moriarty’s prediction, Shiv Shankar Muikjerji, the much more powerful ambassador in the Nepali case than Moriarty is, while describing India’s “flop two-pillar theory” vis-à-vis Nepal in a KTV interview had offered our Loktantric leaders the cheaply available “card” in Nepali political bazaar called as the “Indian card”- while offering support to the Nepali leaders to help them downsize the monarch.

Mukherji eschewing all diplomatic limits while criticizing the monarch had said "The King's roadmap is incorrect." Mukherjee added India will support parties at any cost, because India is a democratic country.

The important part of these two incidents was that the US never supported the SPA for their acts to join hands with the terrorist declared Maoists but India on the other hand wanted to down size the Monarchy in Nepal- which was not yielding to the Indian dictates at any cost, who was also penalized for his excessive use of the China Card. But did he?

However, on both these occasions wherein Moriarty and Mukherji were involved, the Loktantric leaders got the needed boost to tell their cadres, “Look the international community is behind us, help us give him a final blow”. That’s what exactly happened, the monarchy bowed down. Thereafter, Lokatantra prevailed, the Maoists entered into the mainstream politics, which was always a welcome move. Analysts still claim that the pressure exerted internationally was unbearable for monarch as compared to the one originated locally.

These two statements became the landmark of foreign interference  in Nepali politics analysts claim.

Thanks Indian sphere of influence in Nepal that US road map never materialized. As a result yielding to the Indian Himalayan pressure the stubborn Monarch (not listening to the local calls) had to finally bow down, thus peace dawned in the country analyst further claim. The US may differ at this juncture assessing the present chaotic situation prevailing in the country. How, Nancy J.Powell handles the matters will have to be watched?

However, now, after a year of the King’s downfall, the US is being accused by the Maoists for poking its nose unnecessarily in the Nepali politics for their supposedly an undeclared backing to the Monarch. India alike, as it should be, the Maoists have now felt that it is the Indian interference that is troubling Nepal. Better late than never!

Even this Maoists stance is surprising, analysts claim.  It is the same India where, the Maoists commander-in-chief was felicitated in a leadership summit; in response almost a Prachanda in tears, had thanked the Indian leaders and its people for their support during the period of rebellion, is now turning its back against the Maoists. This Maoists tactic!

The Maoists’ Minster for Information and Communication the other day in Rolpa point blank making India a target said that a Nationalist movement should be initiated citing growing Indian interference in the country,  which meant that now the Maoists don’t need the Indian card to shape their politics. In doing so the Maoists want to send signals to the Nepalese population that they were still a nationalist force.

A recently held Maoist central committee meeting that lasted for six days concluded that for the ongoing fight for republic, the issue of foreign interference has remained in a shadow in the party’s agenda. For this the party claims that a struggle should come into effect to fight for the growing interference originating from the Imperialists and the Expansionists.

Here lay the revelation; the China card which flopped in the case of the monarch is being tried by the Maoists. No wonder, C.P.Gajurel and Barshaman Pun alias Ananta have already made a secret trip to China possibly to woo the Chinese leaders.

The climax: Comrade Prachanda is visiting Beijing shortly, writes Punarjagran weekly dated May 15.

Yet another climax: Both the King and the Maoists preferred to use the China card. But why?

To recall, the King failed. Let’s hold our breath as to whether the Maoists succeed in luring the Chinese authorities in the name of preservation of what they call “nationalism and national interests”.

The final climax: Are the Maoists and the King supporting each other hand and glove?

Finally, what has become evident is that no matter whether it is the Monarch or the Maoists or any other so-called Liberals, if they get substantial help from foreign countries it is taken as a friendly gesture; however, if the support benefiting them is not forthcoming it automatically becomes interference.

Analysts here have failed to understand how to define the difference between support and interference.
